For more than a decade, Dana Michel @danamavismichel has been developing a body of work that moves between different stage settings, from conventional frontal stages to museum spaces, always challenging their protocols while at the same time inviting audiences to stay with them, alert and engaged.

A few months after the premiere “YOU CANNOT CAN” at Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, Dana met via Zoom with choreographer and writer Moriah Evans @mosnave , who was also the editor of Movement Research Performance Journal (2010–2020). Working across theater, museums and site-specific contexts, Moriah’s practice investigates how we perceive bodies and movement while questioning the protocols and modes of production through which dance is made and encountered.

Meeting as friends and colleagues, and with some distance from the work’s first performances, Dana and Moriah look at what surfaces within the vessel of YOU CANNOT CAN: trust issues, leisure, labor—and the questions that emerge while trying to feel alive.

EWA DZIARNOWSKA: DANCES BUILT FROM SENSATION

Ewa Dziarnowska’s performance, “This resting, patience”, first shown at Sophiensaele’s @sophiensaele Tanztage 2024, stretches tension between spectacle and relation; the gaze that consumes and the encounter that transforms. Over the course of three hours, dancing becomes tactile and visual, private and shared. Drawn into states of urgency and empathy, one might feel less a spectator than a participant in a field of attention. The body emerges as a source of knowledge and experience, and dancing as an activity and an environment.

In this conversation, dancer, choreographer and writer Alice Heyward @allesheyward , and Ewa Dziarnowska reflect on how this work unsettles objectification, cultivates intimacy, and tests the contracts between dancers and audiences across different contexts. They speak of dance as a lover, a teacher, a game without a goal: an embodied practice of transformation that insists on relation over representation.

PW LIVE — ENAD MAROUF: AND NOW IT IS NIGHT
In his work, Enad Marouf explores the fragmental nature of memory, loss and desire, their temporality and how they are embodied through poetry, gesture and choreography.

For PW LIVE Marouf is presenting an iteration / Stanza for two dancers from his performance “And Now It is Night”. The work explores a cruising dance between two strangers. A cruising dance of desire as well as a cruising dance with the unknown and uncertainty. A condition we might all endure. The process of emergence and disappearance of movement, language, sound and light and the fragmented interplay between these formal elements is an invitation to witness a nonlinear story: an unfolding meditation on grief, desire, memory and uncertainty.

🪽 MACKENZY BERGILE—INVITING NEW HUMANITIES
Over the past years, Mackenzy Bergile @aroundbergile has developed a singular artistic language that moves between dance, music, writing, and archival practice. His recent stage work Autothérapie unfolds as an excavation of embodied memory, tracing connections between Haiti, France, colonial and family histories, and the fragments that survive loss. In conversation with Corinna Humuza @corinnahza —Artistic Director of @kunstenfestivaldesarts —he reflects on art as a way of imagining forms of humanity that do not yet have a name, one that remains attentive to ruins while insisting on the possibility of becoming otherwise.
