Field watches all start to look the same after a while. This one doesn’t.

For almost two weeks I wore a prototype of the Vesora Gantry Field, the first watch from a new New York microbrand. The double-layer enamel dial is what pulls you in. It catches the light with a recessed sector and little blue triangles, but it’s still as easy to read as a field watch should be. At 39.5mm wide and 46.5mm lug to lug, it sits perfectly on my 6.5" wrist.

The bracelet was a real surprise too, with an on-the-fly micro-adjust clasp that plenty of brands at this price still skip.

$569 gets you a Swiss hand-wound Sellita in the production version, 100m of water resistance and double-domed sapphire. That’s one of the strongest value cases I’ve seen in a field watch this year.

Sixty years ago, a jet took off from a Surrey airfield and changed what a fighter could be.

On 31 August 1966, the first Harrier flew from Dunsfold Aerodrome. It could take off straight up, hover and land without a runway, all thanks to the Pegasus engine and its four swivelling nozzles.

AVI-8 has built its 60th anniversary edition around that engine. A turbine spins in place of the small seconds, and the same turbine is engraved on the caseback. The edition even takes its name, Dunsfold, from the airfield where it all began.

Fifty ghosts are hidden in every watch. Can you find them all?

Spinnaker and Seconde/Seconde/ are back for their fourth Halloween collaboration, and this time the phantoms play hide-and-seek. The CRAZY shows its ghosts in four colours, all of them lumed. The QUIET looks like a plain white-dial diver until you shine the UV torch on it.

Both have a 40mm steel case, a white ceramic bezel shaped like the hem of a ghost’s robe, and a Miyota 9039 inside. Each costs $600. The first run is numbered: 1,500 CRAZY and 850 QUIET. Sales open October 16, followed by a one-week pre-order for a second run made to order.

Every modern Timex Marlin has been round. The Chatham is the first to break that habit, with a 36mm cushion case, applied Breguet numerals and a Miyota 8215 automatic, from €279.

Cushion cases tend to wear a little larger than their diameter, so 36mm here still has real presence on the wrist. It's a mid-century dress watch shape that almost nobody else makes at this price.

A first look at the Gantry Field, the debut watch from New York-based microbrand Vesora Watch Co.

At $469 on preorder, it brings a Sellita SW210-1b, a double-layer enamel dial, sapphire crystal and a compact 39.5mm case.

This particular piece is a prototype, so there are a few differences from the final production watch: this sample has a Miyota 9039, is 11.3mm thick instead of 10.6mm, and the dial says “Automatic” rather than “Gantry.”

But first impressions? There’s something very appealing about the simplicity here. I've been wearing it all week and it is genuinely one of the comfiest watches I've worn.

Edifice has spent years building big chronographs. The EFR-109 goes the other way.

It's a 38mm steel case, 9.8mm thick, with a slightly domed crystal that gives the dial a bit of vintage depth. It comes in four versions: black, navy, green with gold-toned hands, and a cream dial on perforated brown leather. Casio photographed the whole line next to a Toyota 2000GT, and the cream one looks like it belongs in that car.

It's quartz, rated to 10 bar, and costs €119 (about $136).

Square case, softened corners, a bracelet that flows straight out of it. It's a design language I love, and it's usually priced far out of reach.

The Duxot Quadrata 24 Hour Automatic brings it down to $320, with finishing that holds up close and a blue fumée dial that changes with every move of the wrist.

There's a certain kind of watch design that has always felt out of reach. The square case with softened corners, brushed faces broken by polished bevels, a bracelet that flows straight out of the case. It belongs to watches most of us will only ever admire in magazines.

Duxot sent me the Quadrata 24 Hour Automatic ahead of its release, and it brings that look down to just $320.

The finishing is what surprised me first. The brushing is fine and even, the polish is close to a mirror, and the blue fumée dial, with its horizontal lines makes it look like a premium piece. On paper it measures 42mm. On my 6.5-inch wrist, the short lugs, the 11.4mm thickness and the the bracelet's taper make it feel smaller than that.

I've worn it to the office and to dinners with friends, and it's coming with me to a wedding this week. Friends kept telling me the same thing: it looks premium.

Héron made its name with a scratch-resistant diver. Now it has built an explorer.

The new Continental comes in a 37mm case, sized between the two current Rolex Explorers. The case and bracelet are hardened to around 1,200 HV, roughly six to eight times harder than regular steel. The sandwich dial has four raised lume blocks, the Miyota 9039 inside has no date, and water resistance is 100m.

It costs $630 and comes in black, blue or cream.
