A month ago, I closed a chapter that was as bitter as it was sweet. Sweet because the sleepless nights, Turnitin scores exam anxiety, and food rationing are finally over; bitter because I had to let go, be a real adult, and turn four years of Cave Hill madness into memories I hold so dearly and lessons I will never forget.

Coming into this, I thought the hardest part of UWI would’ve been the exams and assignments… but boy oh boy, was I wrong. The real challenge was figuring out life, and truly figuring out who Deon-Já is in the middle of all of it. My battle scars taught me the true meaning of love, friendship, and strength (other things too, but “for the purpose of this essay,” we’ll stick to those three).

Witnessing the sacrifices made by my family, especially my mom, to ensure I graduated debt-free, and the prayers and support they all poured into me to secure my success, that taught me true love.

Having my friends show up every step of the way, celebrating every win, and correcting me when I needed it, that taught me true friendship (honourable mention to my Bajan friends who made Barbados feel like home and drove me around for the free, appreciate y’all forever! 🤣❤️).

Changing my degree two years in, losing my grandpa and grand aunt during GRENSAC week while I was president, and preparing for surgery right before finals in my last year… yhhh, those experiences definitely taught me the meaning of strength.

My main goals were always, and still are, to be extraordinary by defying all odds put against me by my ADHD, to leave a positive impact on the people I meet, and to be worthy of the attention I command. I may have fumbled the bag a couple of times through all the chaos, but overall, I kinda ate that.

All I feel now is gratitude and pride, and I thank God for every bit of it.

If you asked me, “What’s next?” I have no concrete answer; but what I can tell you for sure is, “We taking over, global, and we want to go higher than that… what you thought? Watch we raise the bar.” taken in Bridgetown, Barbados by @q._.dee
