The Dream of the Wood, 2026, acrylics on canvas, 38x66 inches 🪾

This painting was inspired by the 8th-century Old English poem The Dream of the Rood. It is the most complex work I have made to date, composed of more than 1,000 individual branches within its structure. It is also the most time-intensive piece I have undertaken, developed over several months, from September through January.

Throughout the process, I was thinking about sublimity and painting’s capacity to transcend linear time: how a landscape can exist outside of a specific historical moment, holding multiple temporalities at once.

An Instagram comment turned into a case study.

Before anything else, my sincere thanks to Becky Moon for allowing me to use both her artwork and our exchange for this post.

Over the past few weeks, a number of people have asked me how I arrive at some of the comments I leave under artworks.

I usually do not know in advance.

I look, I wait, I free associate, and eventually a few fragments survive long enough to become a comment.

This kind of attention is still quite new to me. During the last two and a half months on Instagram, I have had a huge learning curve here.

In this carousel, I give you an idea of that process step by step, using Becky Moon’s painting *Origin of Plants* as an example.

You might experience something similar when looking at art.

To everyone who has given me feedback over the past weeks: thank you very much.

Tiktaalik, 2026, Acrylics on canvas, 50x36 inches 🐟🦎

I’ve been thinking a lot about where we come from, the complexity of evolution, and deep time. Tiktaalik roseae is a 375-million-year-old fossil discovered in the Canadian Arctic in 2004 that bridges the evolutionary gap between fish and the first four-legged land animals. Tiktaalik is an Inuktitut word meaning “large freshwater fish”. The painting depicts what I imagine the structure of its mind when it first came out of water, into the warm Devonian air. by @q1moon
