Ali Ben Nasser is often remembered as the referee at the centre of football’s most enduring controversy.

Yet as the 2026 World Cup begins amid visa restrictions, border politics and growing questions around who gets to participate, his story feels less like a relic of the past and more like a reminder that football has always reflected the world beyond the pitch.

Had no idea? Yea neither did we.

Thankfully @qabeeleh did a deep dive into the sample and the fascinating origins of Orkes Gambus, a genre that started with Yemeni immigrants who travelled to Indonesia in the 19th century, bringing much of their culture and sound with them.

post might get taken down due to copyright but tuz, 10 year anniversary of endless dropping today

been spending a lot of time with this record over the past year, and i feel like not a lot of people have dug into it since it’s not on traditional streaming, so here’s a couple of moments:

slide 1 from “unity” - the lyrics on this one seem notable for a song that dropped ten years ago
slide 2 from “slide on me” - “they forgettin that it’s me akh, akhiiiii, tell em i ain’t gone wallahiiii” was a vocal stim for a bit and it still kinda makes me laugh ten years on
slide 3 from “wither” - “i hope our garden grooves where we dance this afternoon, hope our children walk by spring when flowers bloom, hope they get to see my colour, know that i’ve enjoyed sunshine, pray they get to see meeeee wither”. no lie yall that bar is just some of my favourite writing ever, not just in music but anywhere really
slide 4 from “alabama” - i simultaneously hate and love this song, it has two of my favourite artists in sampha and frank ocean running a beautiful two man step, then it’s cut WAY too short, ill take what i can get but wallah haram by @qabeeleh

one year anniversary ziad rahbani’s passing today and i wanna take a quick sec to highlight one of my favourite moments in music, this thirty second stretch that starts around the 3:15 mark of abu ali

tend to break down songs i love into moments, and since i heard this particular one, its had me in a chokehold i haven’t gotten out of since, nor do i want to be. what a gift ziad rahbani was.

first slide - clip from abu ali
second and third slides - screenshots from a youtube comment on that clip
fourth slide - an uncredited photo that was likely taken in 1978 during the abu ali sessions by @qabeeleh
