I am a child of the north. Raised by the tan braided rivers spilling across the landscape like veins. The midnight sun. The eternal winters. The dark. The clouds of mosquitoes. The mountains. The endless tundra. The oceans of black spruce trees. My soul feels a connection to it every time I’m here. It’s part of who I am. I’m incredibly thankful to have a career that flys me around and drops me out of the sky into these places. Fire season is about halfway over and boy it’s been a magnificent one.

The @the.t.dog.alaska dogsled race is kind enough to let human powered people in on their badass event! One of (maybe the?) coolest endurance events out there! Dog team? Race it! Skijor? Race it! Bike? Race it! Fulfilled a goal of finally seeing the Tanana river between nenana and Fairbanks in its entirety. Some classic type 2 fun out on the river in the sunshine. Congrats @cmckenzie907 on the bike win. Thanks @hannahadventures for greeting me at the finish line with a cheeseburger. Thankyou to everyone involved with the race, will come back! by @qevenson

“If you think of someone, reach out.”

A mantra written as the last of 7 or so “rules to a happy life” that a dear friend had written on a piece of notebook paper and hung up on his bedroom wall.
“Wow I really love that one” I would think to myself. We have these amazing super computers in our pocket that have the ability to contact anyone we’ve ever met at any time and have an immediate photo of their smiling face on the screen where you can laugh and catch up on their lives.

“Average screen time for this week was 3 hours and 47 minutes per day” or something close to it, reads my phone every sunday. An absolutely embarrassing amount of the hours a week that add up to almost a part time job ive spent on my phone are not spent talking to friends or family. They are spent with the mindless thumb flick we are all too familiar with, scrolling away hoping the next thing is going to bring us joy or purpose, or do we even know why we’re doing it? Hours of our precious lives melting away to short videos and photos from people we never have and or will never meet. A mind nummer, AI ridden mess of depression and anxiety fed to us nonstop on a screen. A distracting, purposeless fog. All of the time I catch myself in a hypocritical spiral of anger and disappointment at myself for being terrified of time passing, but also spending it buried in the fog on my iPhone.

Felt so good to be back in the van for a few weeks. Many friends caught up with, family visited, 2,000 miles driven, and a beginning of entering into a new world of paragliding.
This van to me is so much more than a vehicle or a place to stay. After it sitting for almost three years and not being driven to immediately jumping into a long journey, I had some time to reflect about this bucket of rust.
This van represents many things to me. It represents the way that I wish to view the world and live. It’s not perfect, there’s a shitload of rust, none of the corners of wood line up perfectly, the roof leaks, the engine shits out occasionally, but it’s mine, and I touched pretty much every inch of this thing while building it and swapping the engine. It doesn’t have a “just throw money at it and have someone else do it” in it. Just me, and friends turning wrenches and pounding nails. And it sure as fuck does not have any AI in it. Every question I had was solved with asking friends, calling mechanics and companies to ask for guidance, and problem solving through things. Never just taking the easy way to have a water guzzling robot walk me through everything.
This van also represents true friendship and helping people around me. I would not have been able to get this thing going without the help of some dear friends. Watching friends be able to use their knowledge to help me out was amazing. This chunk of metal is a reminder to me that doing things yourself, learning, and doing it imperfectly are often way better than just paying to have someone else do it.
So damn fun to be back rolling around in the van with my wife @hannahadventures throwing peace signs to everyone. Peace and love from the van ✌️☮️🚐 by @qevenson

When I first moved to Minnesota to pursue curling, I didn’t really know anyone. Moving across the continent from where I grew up to chase a dream was quite daunting, but Minnesota being the place that it is, I was welcomed with open arms by many people. Two of which that stick out the most, are these two.

You guys are absolute beauties of humans. So driven, dedicated, loving, and just a damn good time. I’m proud to have the memories I do with you. I am proud to have played with, against, and along side both of you. And holy shit am I proud of you guys for this week. It was an absolute joy to watch. You guys brought the fucking vibes full throttle and never let up. You are both great ambassadors of the sport, and watching you guys all these years even after leaving the sport continues to inspire me.

Congratulations, Cory and Korey, you’re fucking Olympic medalists and you deserve every fucking bit of it. Soak in every bit of it, it’s been a long time coming, and boy it’s good to see hard work pay off.

For how much time I still absolutely melt my brain on this stupid app, I don’t do a good job of posting very much, which in turn defeats the only thing on this app that I still value, and that’s sharing things and connection with people through them also sharing their experiences. I am going to try to do better in the future.
On the topic of connection, I just spent around 3 weeks in the Philippines with the person who I feel most connected to on earth. Myself and my lovely wife @hannahadventures spent 3 weeks laying on beaches, eating amazing food (so many scallops) riding mopeds around, and swimming in the ocean. So many incredible experiences from continuing to celebrate (our) love and also spending time in this country. Much to reflect on, but for now, Hannah I love you, happy honeymoon, and thankyou Philippines 🙏 by @qevenson
