Iron sharpens iron
Literally, iron sharpens iron through abrasive friction, where one piece of metal (like a knife) is rubbed against another (a sharpening steel or stone) to straighten, hone, and grind down edges. This metal-on-metal contact removes microscopic shavings, turning a dull tool into a sharp, efficient edge through hard work, heat, and friction.

How the Literal Process Works:
Friction and Heat: Rubbing two pieces of iron together creates immense friction, which generates heat needed to reshape the metal's edge.
Micro-abrasion: The harder or rougher piece of iron, such as a sharpening file, grinds away metal shavings from the softer or duller piece, removing imperfections.
Honing the Edge: It forces the microscopic teeth of the metal edge back into a straight, razor-sharp alignment.
Hard Work: The process requires consistent, purposeful, and often forceful physical labor to be effective.

In the context of the proverb, just as this process is not gentle, human refinement often involves challenging, uncomfortable interactions that ultimately make individuals stronger and more effective.
