Sandra - You embody resilience & confidence effortlessly. As I literally witnessed the power of your soul and your ancestors resting in your eyes. These photos rock me to my core. Thank you for sharing your life stories with me, and trusting me to share space with you. Thank you for speaking into my future as a photographer, having only met you after a few minutes on this day.

It hits even deeper now after seeing what we made together through these film photos, and what came through. You absolutely are a seer and a visionary. Eye see you !

No coincidence when I met you, you were sitting next to a turtle statue, as they bring the spiritual message of patience, resilience, and the ability to move steadily through life’s challenges.

Thankful we crossed paths, and I have so much gratitude for you and your people that day who welcomed me in like family. See you soon !

ROOTS

Interesting how this moment of honoring my wife’s grandma by planting rose bushes manifested. We poured Libation, we played second line to honor her Baton Rouge roots. We said her name “Ophelia Hampton” -

Soon as these rose bushes hit the earth, the photos even reflect the shift that maybe most eyes wouldn’t catch. There is noticeable shift in the depth of the shadows, even to the point as shown in the last photo a blending of the mothers who came before my wife. Who is tied to her by blood and bone.

Turtle island is our home, we got roots here, through and through. I’ve known this since I got here, in this life. Asé

Lastly, the process I have with making photos is very much so intuitive. I work my magic with what’s available, like my grandmas before me did. I don’t ask any of my subjects to pose, or to stand here or there. I love working with the energy that is present. Imagine what I will do with a studio ✨👌

O A X A C A

Thank you to land and the people Oaxaca for bringing me in as family. You all helped me realize what this experience was really about for me, and that is deep connection & friendship. Grateful to experience the knowing of who you really are, and how alive your ancestral connections are to this day. Even after colonization. It will take me some time to reflect on everything, and in that reflection I will be slow & intentional. I am humbled and grateful to have met the people I did and the friends I made along the path. I will be back !

J A R I P E O - OAXACA, MEXICO

Thank you again to the Webbs @webb_norriswebb - your words, insights and wisdom from the years of experience you shared with us, will take years to really settle in for me…thank for showing up for our generation of image makers. Grateful I was invited into what was for me, a very humbling experience. The land and the people of Oaxaca stopped me in my tracks, and offered me clarity on what my vision is, and my “why” when working with the medium of photography. Much love to all of my classmates and the staff who held us up and supported us every step of the way. Thank you to @laluzworkshops for providing a space for us to really show up daily to this workshop, and having a home base for us all to connect with each other. For me, this is a new beginning and marks a milestone in my journey for sure.

Most importantly, thank you to the people of Oaxaca who received me like family, and allowed me to make photos of them..as soon as I’m home, the photos of the community will be shared with you all asap ! Grateful to have had this experience - I will be back.

Honor Your Mother

It’s so funny how before beginning this photoshoot together, we talked about your song “Part of Me” - and how you felt what was coming through your song lately, was more about your connection to the earth. Even though originally that may not have been what it was originally inspired by when you made it. As I sat here scanning the photos we made, almost immediately I kept seeing your mama coming through. In your eyes, and parts of your face, eye see your mama.

“Honor Your Mother” - no matter what that relationship was/is or isn’t. When we honor our mothers & our fathers we give ourselves permission to not only grow into our fullest potential, but by nature we heal ourselves of any past issues/traumas that may have affected our current relationship with ourselves. To forgive, and to know even in error most of us are trying our best in this world, with what we were given. Thank you earth for your care, and sturdy support to walk + grow on, even when we forget about you. You are always unconditionally loving us. Asé

In Memory of Cory Walker

Right now, what it all means..not clear on. What I can say is I don’t believe in coincidences, and for some reason on this day I had my camera. To hear that you had passed last weekend, made me feel some kind of way. Not that I haven’t dealt with death before, it’s something about when you’re doing earth work..handing someone food, shaking hands with soil on it. Maybe that I was just saying thank you for letting us glean each time we stopped by.

I share these film photos to honor the memories not that long ago at all, moments that have a chance to live on. To continue to tell the story for the young ones coming behind us.

Although you aren’t in any of these photos, you were close by, especially when you gathered us bunches of garlic. Thank you for welcoming us in, and feeding the people. Thank you for the kale, collards, corn, garlic, lettuce, squash..and the conversations over the summer on how you ended up here. Glad I had the chance to meet you.
