I was NOT going to miss pro XCC at @usacycling Endurance Nationals.

We planned this race for more than a year and while it missed some of the character we planned the character came in the people. I’m literally allergic to short course racing, I’m a long doggie. A week into heavy legs of production didn’t matter, this was destiny between the tape.

Last row call up but fresh @shimanomtb XTR di2 loaded up, the Scalpel HT and I were willing to rip!!

It must be what Tadej feels like on the climbs. Wall of noise. Energy coming from the crowd. And a sensation I’m not sure I’ll ever feel more profoundly.

That was pretty amazing. And I beat my call up and fellas with fresh legs; so… that was pretty cool.

@theappalachianjourney is a pretty radical bike party. We built it to be equal parts sharp nosed bike race, challenging personal triumph, and universally enriching experience that shares the love. It might not need to be said that my experience is a little bit different than everyone else’s, what with the responsibilities of making many aspects of it happen, but it nevertheless turned out to be just those same things for me!

Pointy nosed bike race - yep! A course that challenged every single rider, without a doubt. It showed off the many value I love about Appalachian dirt.

Personal triumph - absolutely. Sharing our home dirt with 550 buddies was a big deal. And we saw huge days, major personal breakthroughs, and partners aid each other to arrive at the finish #bettertogether.

Enriching - oh and HOW! We couldn’t have been surrounded by a better pack of riders all weekend. I am so thankful to the volunteers and staff who make it happen, thankful to @visitfloydva and @visitvbr who aid us in sharing the love of these mountains, and thankful to the many participants who bring their best and show up for each other in ways large or small.

Let’s do it again!!!

No cowboy dares saddle up without his trusty hat.

I may not know much about cycle craws, but I know singlespeed. And the weirder the better when it comes to single.

@gocrossrace is in town. Im bad at cyclo-craws. So lets get some practice on a freshly Singlespeedy @ridecannondale Topstone.

“Someday we’ll dream about today.”

I’ve lost count of how many Shenandoah Mountain 100s I have under my wheels. Partially because they’re all unique, and so special. With obligations on Sunday this year, I pulled into @stokesvillecampground to race the 100 K.

This year felt really special. A bit of reunion of those of gray in the spirt and perhaps a bit of passing of the torch. There was a huge contingent of U-19 Racers. It was a thrill it to spend time among the wheels with them.

I wanted to go hard into the first single track sections on Narrowback Ridge because that bony singletrack will have its way with you under pressure. And the only one who had the legs to come with me was Ayden. We traded up on the descent down to Tillman Road making fast but safe moves. When we bottomed out on the gravel the coach in me came out, and I explained to Ayden why I made that move and how I felt like it was the right one to win. We rolled a very steady, hard pace all the way to Lynn trail, making a group behind us work hard for it. They caught us at Lynn but once again we took the front; playing the same card that did us well on Narrowback.

It was about then we knew the weather was going to get real.

We could hear thunder in the distance getting ever closer. But the thing about a backcountry mountain bike race is that there’s no off switch.

Down the mountain was the fastest way to safety. So we dug in as I rolled third wheel off of Wolf Ridge. Things became increasingly dangerous as lightning struck around us before rain began to pour amidst the electricity. At some point; unable to see particularly well in the downpour I double snake bit my rear tire on a classic sharp dinner plate from the George Washington kitchen. I only knew about one so I pulled over and plugged it in the pouring rain, fourth through sixth place catching me; Petrylak, Fontana, and Chris Beck. So I wasn’t in bad company. But I was determined to catch the front.

I dropped the hammer and made it back to 1st on Hankey Mtn. Ayden again the only one who could follow. I was able to feel him out on the steep pitches before Dowells Draft, increasingly confident I could dispatch him when we met Hankey taken in Stokesville Campground by @quadsworth

A little insight into the big time dorking that takes place around here. Hand me a camera and I WILL record meaningless thoughts about tires and WILL risk losing my camera to a delivery driver.

But it all works out to make some hopefully worthwhile thoughts about a @maxxisbike tire I have wanted for a long time. We worked on the Reaver right up in Floyd County and its a tire I LOVE for gravel racing or fast riding.

It's quick rolling character with ultra-reliable side knob have done the miles in 40 and 45, so how does the BIG dog 50 feel? Well. Amazing.

It maintains that fast rolling speed with minimal wallow and bob even at very low pressure (18/20). It mounts up large (52mm on my caliper). And scales everything up to still catch my goofy self when I get a leanin and a slidin.

September permits the mind to wander a bit. To settle in different places and see things differently.

And I’m so enjoying the unoccupied wandering of where it’s taken me already.

New regions without expectation or obligation. Places not defined by workouts or efforts. And a hint of autumn beginning it’s descent.

Topstone adventure mode engaged.

@emyhairfield and I took a little side quest on our trip to France. Like the mountaineers of old we took the tourist tram to the Aguille Du Midi and observed the Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe. The air is thin (12k ft), the tourists are thick (pain au chocolate), and the experience is so worthwhile!

We opted to hike back down from the mid station after just a little too much social stimulation. And I would do it again!

If you know me you know I deeply love and share the music of Dolly Parton. She and the female singer-songwriters of here era in country and folk music are some of the most powerful musicians there have ever been.

Dolly’s passing is a tremendous loss. For the person she was; obviously, but moreover for the cultural lodestar she had become in the past decade. Her relevance reached far beyond country music and into our daily lives. She was someone we could all look to as a beacon of what was right and how to be. How to treat others well without taking ourselves too seriously. Her passion for God and his love could not be overstated and she shared it so readily.

In her music she dealt with the realest topics - Love stolen (I don’t Wanna Throw Rice and Jolene), personal identity (Backwoods Barbie), suicide (The Bridge), the loss of an infant and partner at once (Down from Dover). And so much more unpleasantness that characterizes the human experience. She tackled the worst of life, and emerged the best of it.

And in her actions she supported the least among us, often quietly for decades at a time. Through her Imagination Library she gave books to those in need with no strings attached. She used proceeds of Whitney Houston’s singing “I Will Always Love You” to reinvigorate a historically black neighborhood in Nashville coined the “House that Whitney Built.” Without telling anyone for 20 years.

But her giving never ended there. Dolly treated everyone with candor and kindness, deeply valuing who they are; whatever that may be, while not taking herself too seriously. I do not believe she was perfect, but golly she clearly tried.

And if we get nothing else from Saint Dolly, it should be that. A legacy that giving to and standing up for others doesn’t withdraw from your personal bank, it magnifies it. Value others, without taking yourself too seriously.

I’d encourage you to dig into her catalogue beyond the algorithm and see what resonates. Because there remains tremendous power and meaning in the work of Dolly Parton. She’ll be missed. And it’s up to us to show up for each other now.

Not to confuse your timeline TOO much, but My My, Merci a @thealpcycles for one helluva Tour de Mont Blanc a few weeks back. Not an experience Ill soon forget, nor will my cloud storage.

So I wanted to drop some short clips of the absolute EPIC riding and scenery collecting with the @insta360 Go Ultra. I played with different mounts and a few different settings and the thing just shoots magic no matter how its set up!

So enjoy a few minutes of beats, buzzing hubs, and buds.

TNGA will be a long tale to tell, a bike check, lots of footage, and a little compartment syndrome are all in the works.

But for now I gotta acknowledge the privilege to do this thing. To share the story we are working on. To share the woods with @tommypenick and @scottmartinimages. And to experience a thing so dear to many was an experience I’ll never forget.

This ride was harder than I expected, and I expected pretty hard. But we made it to the finish, and will carry those precious moments (1 day, 21 hours, 57 minutes of them) until my story ends.
