CEOs are the visionary architects of the business, but while they need to be fully aware of their finances, it is not their role to manage them. That responsibility lies with their CFO. A CFO is the Chief Financial Officer of the company. In the past, managing finances would have been sufficient, but today the role commands more than just being a glorified scorekeeper for the organization. The CFO must evolve. Finance leaders must harness the power of relationship building and growing resources in a world that is racing to the bottom for scraps, while being hyper aware of the rapidly changing global landscape and still confidently lead an organization into the next 50 years. Reporting, compliance, audit, regulatory, commercial feasibility, operational excellence and scorekeeping will be the BASIC requirements of the role. You will need to become a master at value creation. This is the evolution of the Chief Value Officer, the CVO. How do you enable your assets to create more value? How are you going to convert those enablers to actually perform? How does that value created then funnel to its recipients? How does the cycle continue? The last thing I’ll say is this… value creation is going to challenge you to not only think about internal operations but it will be a requirement to think about external stakeholders beyond your Board of Directors. You will need to consider your impact on society and community as well. Even if finance leaders shift into becoming CVOs, not many will be able to master it. Ultimately, to rise as a CVO you must rise within yourself first …. And that is always the biggest challenge for most leaders. But in the face of AI, it’s a critical success factor. by @quantum.xi
