Not enough people are talking about men's mental health. Roughly 80% of all suicides are committed by men—worldwide, that translates to about one man losing his life every single minute of every day. Men are socialized to suppress vulnerability and hide emotional distress, which leads to lower rates of seeking professional mental health support and higher rates of unmanaged depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

As someone who struggles deeply with this, and who spent the past year feeling like his life was completely over, I want to speak up. I am actively seeking all the help I can get. I’ve been hospitalized for my mental health, and I’ve been on medication for two years alongside a longer history of struggling. I know I feel weak at times, and I’m not afraid to admit it. But that is no excuse to give up or blame the war, my military service, or the people around me for my problems. Ultimately, nobody can save me but myself.

Mike Shinoda’s song became the anthem of my personal fight. He managed to channel his own mental breakdown into music that resonates perfectly with what I’m going through:

"I don't have a leg to stand on / Spinning like a whirlwind with nothing to land on."

For me, Ultimate Frisbee is my music. The community and the purpose it gives me are keeping me grounded and sane. Through it, I found my place to start once again.

Two years since my last national championship. It was my first time with such long brake from the ultimate since 2009. The longest before was around 2 months. Coincidentally enough two years ago I started battling with mental health challenges a lot, which are still ongoing. But being back to the game gives me ability to be distracted from the service and all related stress. I own this game a lot in my life, because I understand it's something more than a game. by @quantumcurls

Recently, I received war veteran status (укр. УБД). I haven’t gotten the physical document yet, as it awaits me in Kyiv, while I am currently serving somewhere away

As a modest European and an anti-war scientist, I could never have imagined myself in the army—let alone earning such a title. I spent all my twenties in universities, dedicating myself to science, far from anything military-related. It’s deeply ironic how war, the most terrible thing in existence, has nevertheless shaped me into a better person. Every challenge that didn’t break me made me stronger, pushing me to leave my comfort zone and swim against the tide.

I’ve been on the edge many times, but the people close to me always pulled me back. With each struggle, I grew a little stronger, constantly experimenting with different ways to take care of my mental health—trying almost everything. And somehow, it worked. After six months, I fully returned to normal and realized that most of my fears had existed only in my mind.

Now, I’m more motivated than ever to do my job and bring victory closer. by @quantumcurls
