In Edward con Grutzner’s “Mephisto” the devil is not presented as a monster. he appears theatrical, intelligent, amusing. Dressed almost entirely in red, with a feathered cap, worn costume and a restrained smile, he looks more like an actor stepping onto a stage than a creature emerging from Hell. His power does not depend on physical violence. he persuades, negotiates and makes temptation sound reasonable. Faust is not dragged into the bargain. he chooses to enter it.

Grutzner captures that psychology through characters, not spectacle. His smile feels controlled rather than wild, and the sword beside his hand introduces danger without overwhelming his charm.
