Wanted! Community groups and organisations in the Bath & North East Somerset area who are working hard to end fuel poverty and support affordable warmth.

Our community benefit fund is now open for applications until 29th October 1pm. Grants of up to £5,000 are available as our surplus income is given to the BWCE Fund, which is administered by Quartet Community Foundation.

Carbon reduction does not just relate to energy projects; it might also include local food, sustainable transport or waste reduction or indeed any activity that reduces carbon emissions. Typically the Fund receives fewer applications around addressing fuel poverty or affordable warmth - so applications in this area are particularly welcomed.

“Taking action at the local level to tackle the climate emergency has never been more important and it’s always exciting to see new projects coming forward each year. We are very proud of all the local organisations we have funded so far and of the clear community benefit they deliver.

We are aware that fuel poverty is not just a winter issue as our climate changes and would like to see projects that provide, for example, more warm and cool spaces for vulnerable people in the area. We would also welcome projects that help to shift people from oil heating in rural areas to low carbon alternatives.”
— Jane Wildblood, Chair of Trustees for the BWCE Fund

🎉 Congratulations to the winners of this year's Community Dragons' Den!

It was fantastic to see more than 80 residents come together to celebrate local ideas, hear inspiring pitches, and vote for projects that will make a real difference across Radstock and Westfield.

Thanks to the generosity of the Roper Family Charitable Trust, the funding pot was doubled to £10,000, helping even more community ideas become reality. A huge thank you to our Dragons, Somer Valley Rotary, everyone who pitched, and all the residents who joined us on the night and helped choose the winning projects.

Together, you're helping make Radstock and Westfield even better places to live, work and thrive.

MEET LEFT HANDED GIANT

From day one, LHG wanted their business to be more than just making beer. They wanted to be a force for positive change, socially and economically, and to leave this city a little better for having been in it.

Over the years that’s meant carbon reduction commitments, achieving B Corp accreditation, and a steady run of charitable partnerships and contributions. Despite this effort, it wasn’t quite having the difference they dreamed of.

In November 2025, they sat down with @bristolbeerfactory and @quartetcommunity asked “How can we give more? How can we have more impact?”

Discussing BBF’s Brewed to Give initiative highlighted the facts:
- 1 in 4 people access charity services every week
- 60% of charities at risk of reducing or suspending services
- 95% have seen demand for their services significantly increase

Together, they asked how much further real, focused support could go if more than one business was behind it. We Back Bristol is the answer.

1% of LHG’s revenue, pledged as an ongoing commitment to the place that built us. Embedded into their business - not a one-off gesture.

Collectively, WE BACK BRISTOL is on track to donate £200k in year one. That’s a mix of cash, assets and skills, straight into the hands of grassroots organisations doing the work, right here in this city.

“That is the kind of investment we want to be making for Bristol”, says Bruce Gray, LHG Founder, “People Before Profit. Always.”

Imagine if every business in this city gave 1%…

Left Handed Giant Back Bristol. Do you? 🧡

MEET BRISTOL BEER FACTORY

WE BACK BRISTOL is a collective of businesses committed to giving back. An idea sparked by the success of Bristol Beer Factory’s Brewed to Give initiative.

Back in 2019, BBF’s MD Sam Burrows stood in a marquee at @stwerburghscityfarm watching the team count up the takings from their annual fundraiser. BBF had sold them the beer at cost price - a nice gesture. But after a day spent hearing about their work, and meeting the people who use their services, Sam was disappointed he hadn’t given it free of charge.

That was the lightbulb moment. Every beer should give back. Every pint should have purpose.

Four years on, BBF donates 2% of every brewery sale and is on track to raise £1 million for local causes. As Sam puts it: “Giving back isn’t optional. It’s part of our DNA.”

But 1 in 4 people in this city rely on local charity support - too big a challenge for one brewery to solve alone. So when @lefthandedgiantbrewing knocked on the door in November 2025, the conversation quickly moved from what two breweries could do, to: “Imagine what Bristol would look like if every business gave 1%?”

That question is why WE BACK BRISTOL exists.

Every BBF pint already gives back. Imagine what happens when every business does too.

THREE SIMPLE STEPS

How does a 1% pledge actually reach the charities that need it?

Three steps, no complexity, no admin burden on your end.

1. Commit - pledge at least 1% of revenue: cash, assets or time (ideally half will be cash as that is the only way we can shift power to our not-for-profit sector).

2. Contribute - cash and skills (time) is distributed through Quartet Community Foundation, who know Bristol’s charity sector inside out. Share your business assets (product, stock, service, space etc) directly to the groups that need them, building real relationships along the way.

3. Celebrate - your business gets a plaque, a place on our platform, and a clear, honest record of what your 1% has actually funded.

That’s the whole model. Nine Bristol businesses are already doing it.

👆Curious how it would work for yours? Head to the website.

I’m inviting community groups across Avon and Somerset to apply for grants between £1,000 and £10,000 through my new Community Fund.

What I’ve heard repeatedly from organisations, volunteers and community leaders across the region is that access to funding can be one of the biggest barriers to turning their ideas into action.

This fund is about addressing those barriers, investing in communities and backing local solutions.

I’m looking forward to supporting projects that make a real difference and contribute to the priorities in my Police and Crime Plan, whether that’s helping to address antisocial behaviour, supporting people at risk of harm, preventing violence or strengthening community relationships.

Find out more via the news link in my bio.

WE BACK BRISTOL! DO YOU?

Today, on International Day of Charity, we’re backing Bristol with £36,530 - where it’s needed, when it’s needed.

Why? We love this city and we are committed to supporting the charities that give it its creativity, compassion and colour.

Founded by @bristolbeerfactory, @lefthandedgiantbrewing, the hospitality legends behind @teamcanteenbristol and @fanatic_hq - Bristol businesses who believe 1% isn’t just a nice thing to do - it’s the least we owe the city that made us.

Meet Phase 1 👇

🌱 Hartcliffe City Farm CIC, £4,300 - weekly cooking sessions building confidence for people navigating mental health
🍽️ Ambition Lawrence Weston, £2,500 – bringing back the Friday Night Supper Club
🤝 Borderlands, £5,000 – hot food and dignity for asylum seekers and refugees
🥘 St Luke’s Church, £3,750 – a food shop run by local parents, for local parents
🥕 All Saints Parish Church, £4,300 – fresh veg and food education across Eastville, Hillfields and Frome Vale
☕ Knowle West Connection, £4,000 – the Tea Time Club, tackling loneliness one cuppa at a time
🔥 Coexist Community Kitchen CIC, £5,200 – open-fire cooking, growing food, building community
🥦 Lush Greens, £2,480 – 6,700 portions of fruit and veg for Bristol’s food banks
👩‍🍳 Barton Hill Activity Club, £5,000 – teaching kids to cook, one session at a time

This phase is about Food Equity - growing it, cooking it, sharing it, making sure nobody in this city goes without it. Phase 2 is still being shaped. Want a say in it? Pledge your 1%.

Back your city. Support your community. Keep Bristol, Bristol.

1% TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES

Quartet Community Foundation is the charity that turns We Back Bristol’s 1% pledges into citywide impact - distributing cash grants fairly and efficiently, and matching business time and skills to the charities that need them most through their Pro Help service.

We could have done this alone. We didn’t want to. Quartet already knows Bristol’s charity sector inside out - who’s stretched thin, who’s doing quiet, brilliant work, who needs cash versus who needs a spare pair of hands. That knowledge is what makes sure our support reaches the right place at the right time.

Tomorrow is International Day of Charity. We couldn’t think of a better day to kick start the movement with £36k of grants shared between 9 brilliant charities.

Every business adds strength. Every pledge creates impact. Are you in?

KEEP BRISTOL, BRISTOL

Bristol’s independence - its edge, its warmth, its creativity - isn’t guaranteed. It’s built by the community groups and charities that fill the gaps nobody else fills. The youth clubs. The community kitchens. The safe spaces. The people who show up day in and day out.

And right now, they’re under real pressure:

🌡️97% of Bristol charities say their costs are rising faster than their income
📈95% say demand for their services has significantly increased
🛑60% are at risk of reducing or suspending services

WE BACK BRISTOL offers a collective approach to city wide community impact. Backed by local businesses, supported by @quartetcommunity

Launching this Saturday - International Day of Charity.
