Launching our Careers & Employability Lecture Series

Yesterday, we welcomed first-year and Senior Status students to the launch of our School’s Careers & Employability Module lecture series. Patricia Durkin (QUB Careers, Employability & Skills) opened the session with an overview of the tools, resources and support available to Queen’s students.
Students then heard from Katharina Banehr (Baker McKenzie) and Mary Kim Doherty and Megan Bell (Carson McDowell), who shared insights into their firms, career pathways and opportunities for developing legal skills and experience.

A sincere thank you to all our speakers for sharing their expertise and practical advice, helping our students develop the skills and awareness to support their studies and future careers.

Bringing Commercial Law to life with Mills Selig

Our Commercial Law students had the opportunity to hear directly from colleagues at Mills Selig, who joined us at the School of Law for an engaging guest lecture on commercial awareness, training contract applications and life as a trainee.
Sharing practical insights into starting a career in commercial law, the Mills Selig team encouraged students to stay curious, ask questions and embrace collaborative working – advice that extends well beyond securing that first opportunity and into developing as a legal professional.
The session was facilitated by Professor Joan Loughrey and Dr Zi Yang, pictured with John Quinn, Head of Business Development, Tim Richards, Human Resources Team, and colleagues from across Mills Selig, including members of the firm’s trainee cohort. As a leading independent commercial law firm based in Belfast, Mills Selig provided students with an opportunity to connect their academic study of Commercial Law with the realities of professional practice and hear first-hand about the skills and qualities valued by employers.

Our sincere thanks to the Mills Selig team for giving their time, sharing their experiences and supporting our students’ professional development.

Collaboration in action at Queen’s School of Law

A huge thank you to Patricia Durkin, Project Manager within Careers, Employability & Skills, who joined our Placement Module students to deliver a highly practical workshop on preparing for today’s graduate recruitment landscape. From the impact of AI on recruitment and selection to building a compelling CV, exploring Queen’s AI-powered careers tools, and making effective use of LinkedIn, Patricia provided our students with plenty of practical insights to take forward.

The workshop, facilitated by Dr Richard McBride (Module Convenor) and Deirdre Timoney (Employability and Placement Officer), was also a great example of the power of collaboration across Queen’s. By connecting the expertise within our central Careers, Employability & Skills team with the work taking place in the School of Law, we can provide students with even stronger support as they prepare for their future careers.

Thank you, Patricia, for sharing your expertise so generously with our students.

Working collaboratively to help our students become job-ready and future-ready.

What a night. Law on Film returned for its second year last week, on 29 September, with nearly 200 people at Queen's Film Theatre for Los Colonos (The Settlers), chosen by Professor Philippe Sands KC.

Afterwards, we moved to the School of Law's Moot Court, where Sands joined Professor Yvonne McDermott Rees to discuss colonial violence, Indigenous rights, historical responsibility, and the legacies of state violence. We were delighted to welcome members of the judiciary, students, colleagues and many members of the public.

This is what Law on Film is for: taking legal scholarship out of the classroom and into conversation with the wider community. Read the full write-up 👇

What does the law have to say about removing a tyrant? ⚖️

Delighted to see Prof Aoife O'Donoghue from our own QUB School of Law featured in a new ARTE documentary asking whether tyrannicide has ever made the world a better place.

The 23-minute episode runs from Julius Caesar, through the plots against Hitler, to today's authoritarian regimes. Aoife brings her expertise in the history of tyranny and the role of law, exploring what would be needed for such an act to be legitimate and what should follow after a tyrant falls.

A brilliant example of legal scholarship reaching a wide European audience, building on her book On Tyranny and the Global Legal Order (Cambridge University Press).

Free to stream on arte.tv until September 2027 👇

Thank you to Eunice Chong and guests from BPP who also joined us. Thank you also to our staff who came along to chat to the students including Dr Alessandro Corda, Dr Ade Olayode, Seamus Mulholland and others.
