We (QuERI) worked on a "landmark" case with ED OCR and DOJ expanding Title IX to include LGBTQ students back in 2009. Before this case, it was legally ambiguous whether Title IX—which bans sex discrimination in federally funded education—protected students from bullying based on their sexual orientation or gender expression. DOJ intervened in the lawsuit, arguing that the school district failed to prevent severe harassment against a gay student who did not conform to traditional male stereotypes in his appearance and behavior. The settlement clarified that Title IX prohibits discrimination based gender stereotypes, not just biological sex. It established a major precedent regarding how schools must handle bullying related to sexual orientation and gender presentation. This is heartbreaking. by @queeringedu

We circulated these years ago, back when social media was social. They were quotes from publications, or things we frequently said in talks, pasted over artwork kids in our QuERI in-schools arts programs had done. For our 20th anniversary, we are resurrecting them, adding a few more, and posting one a week. by @queeringedu

QuERI was founded September 2006. Shockingly, this is our 20th anniversary. We are grateful to all the graduate student researchers, the fellows, the interns, the PD trainers, the artists, the educators, the funders, the board members, the legislators, and the kids who have been a part of these 20 years. It is a hard time to be doing this work, but we were determined to make it to 20. We have done a lot with a little including delivering no-cost professional development to educators across the state of New York, developing in-school arts and other programming for kids, advocating for qualitative research in public policy, conducting research studies on everything from HIV education to the implementation of state anti-bullying law, and working on legislation and state policy. We are mounting our next big policy push this fall and will see it through the next legislative session. So many things have changed over the years, but our commitment to research-to-policy and practice has not. We believe in the power of applied scholarship. It is urgent in this moment when educational decisions are often shaped by ideologues rather than educator experience and research. by @queeringedu
