On the last day of the heritage month that we proudly claim, we’re admittedly feeling weighed down by the anti-immigrant hate and saddened by how the internalized anti-blackness and anti-indigeneity is playing out today. Still, we want to remind ourselves and you all that for us, ♾️now and always♾️ being here is about showing up for OUR GENTE. We do care “where you come from” because we all come from somewhere just as we care about your lived experience and how it’s informed you about being a human being. Whoever you are — we want to hear about your journey and share your story because it matters to us. If this month is about anything, it’s about our legacy of love. 💞 Whether or not you were born and raised in “the culture” — have remained under the sun of Latino America or are now faraway from a people and a way of living that you missed out on and seek out, you are our gente. If you’re part of the diaspora of the Afro and Indigenous peoples forced to spread out under the imperial reigns of terror — so far out that you have to work extra hard to find your way back to cohesion and connection — we’ve gotchu too and we get it! We’re here to lean on our ancestral ties to pachamama and to one another. 🇵🇪¡Felices Fiestas Patrias! 🇵🇪 Today is Peruvian Independence Day, honoring our liberation from Spain and celebrating our roots to our land, our people, our culture, and our history con comida rica juntes con nuestre familia! Modern day Peruvian politics is a mess, just like it is here, but we do our best to tap into the teachings of our indigenous ancestors. We believe we’re all connected to one another just as we are to Pacha Mama. ♾️ Now, as Latines, we come from a long lineage of chismosas (even if it’s oftentimes perceived negatively). The truth is that WE enter our chismosa era to confide in one another, share our stories, our woes, our hard knock lessons, and resonate with others when that’s shared with us. Without judgement and always con mucho, mucho amor! Angel (they/she) is one of the founding members of Pride Grows. They’re the queer, immigrant-half of Once Upon A Vow, a bilingual wedding officiant and love storyteller sibling duo, celebrating partnerships in NYC and beyond with personalized ceremonies that become heartfelt core memories. Pride Grows is my favorite garden and beloved by those with a “green thumb” for people, a willingness to till new soil, and the courage to clear away the nutrient-poor muck that keeps us stuck and unable to end the blight of hate. We, vendors and marriers alike, are both the seedlings that bloom year after year and the pollinators, appreciating the beauty, resilience, and fabulousness of our LGBTQIA2S+ community while spreading queer joy as far and wide as we decide. Every gardener knows that nothing grows without love. And, at PGIB, we believe that love for ourselves and for one another is the richest soil we can endeavor to cultivate. Happy Loving Day, fam! 💞🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🪻 Today marks 59 years since Mildred & Richard Loving became a legally recognized & protected family in their home state of Virginia. When they eloped in 1958, interracial marriage was illegal & they were imprisoned for it. Though they stayed together, they were under constant threat from everyday haters & the vigilance of the bigoted-run state. Their courage to fight for their right to love each other & build a life together was a major milestone in the civil rights movement. Their enduring love & hardwon battle at the Supreme Court was the catalyst for a “norm” shift that has benefited countless of us who are in partnerships across racial lines. In 1967, the Lovings made history & changed our country. They weren’t the first interracial couple in the USA, they just happened to be the ones called upon to lead by example in that moment. They were poor/working class people who could no longer tolerate the injustice & set out to do their part to correct it so future marriers wouldn’t have to go through the hardships they experienced. Thanks to their sacrifice, millions of interracial families are thriving today. Because of them, many of us are choosing love & authentic living over the fear-induced & racist delusions of separation that’s been part of the social programming. Love is an expansive, joyful force that bridges worlds & cultures uniting us in our shared humanity! Love can also change our status-quo systems for the better; the Loving vs. Virginia case is proof of that. May we carry on their legacy by leading with love & loving ourselves & each other enough to carry on in this mad world as the bold & brilliant community that we are. Never forget that the Loving family, aptly named, set a precedent for Marriage Equality to eventually also become the law of the land. Queer marriers across our nation, let us rejoice for the Lovings and all the social justice champions that broke barriers to get us here today.
