A huge thank you to National Lottery Community Fund for supporting the last 6 months of our youth provision at Quench!

It’s a project at the heart of what we do as a gallery and we don’t talk about it much over here so please take a moment to look at what our group got up to this past few terms and learn about how we work!

The good news is we aren’t going anywhere so keep your eyes peeled for recruitment updates next week. We have a few places for young people aged 13-17 to join us for the next term.

How do you sustain an art practice when your mental health, energy, confidence and circumstances are constantly changing?

Presented as part of Quench’s Where Is My Mind? season, this online conversation brings together artists to speak honestly about the peaks and troughs of creative life. It will explore the particular pressures artists face: precarious income, rejection, comparison, isolation, overwork, sudden opportunities and the expectation to remain endlessly productive and available.
The speakers will discuss how they have navigated periods of instability, adapted their practices during difficult times and learned to recognise when their capacity is changing. The conversation will also consider how artists can communicate their needs to galleries, commissioners and collaborators without feeling they must disclose everything—or fear being seen as unreliable or difficult.
This is not a conversation about suffering making someone a better artist. It is about the practical, imperfect ways people continue making work alongside vulnerability, uncertainty and changing mental health.
The event will take place online and is intended particularly for those unable to visit the exhibition in person. A recording and accompanying resources will be made available afterwards.

Parenthood, Mental Health and Keeping an art practice going! featuring artists Hannah Perry, Nicky Petrie and Rhys Coren and chaired by Rosie Reed. They discuss the realities of sustaining a creative practice alongside parenthood and everyday life. The panel explore the pressures, compromises, joys and unexpected possibilities that come with making work while also caring for others — and what happens to an artistic practice when life doesn’t leave much room for it.

Join us on October 3rd at 11am for our panel discussion with Asa Aryoshi-Pope, Madinah Farhannah Thompson and JGrrey. Chaired by Stef Felton

As part of Where Is My Mind? satellite events programme, join artists Asa Aryoshi-Pope, Madinah Farhannah Thompson and JGrray for a conversation about medication, mental health and artistic practice.

The discussion introduces Asa Aryoshi-Pope’s exhibition Knotweed at Kavel Rafferty Space, using the exhibition and the artists’ own experiences and practices as a starting point for a wider conversation about medication: what it means to take it, choose it, change it or live without it, and how these experiences can intersect with creativity and making work.

Chaired by artist and creative producer Stef Felton, the panel will explore the personal, practical and cultural questions surrounding medication and mental health, while considering how artists navigate these experiences within their practices.

This is an open conversation rather than a clinical discussion, creating space for different perspectives and experiences of medication, treatment, mental health and creativity.

The event is part of Where Is My Mind?, a programme exploring mental health, neurodivergence, identity and the complex relationship between our inner lives and the world around us.
