You’re not a vampire, so there shouldn’t be blood in the sink. 🧛

1. Healthy gums don’t bleed, not when you brush and not when you floss.
2. Bleeding means bacteria under the gumline, and they feed on the inflammation they cause.
3. Gum disease is linked to heart disease and blood sugar, so it doesn’t stay in your mouth.
4. Strong antiseptic mouthwash can kill the good bacteria too, and barely reaches under the gums.
5. Clean between your teeth once a day; most gums stop bleeding within two weeks.
6. Eat the candy in one sitting, pick chocolate over gummies, and drink water after.
7. Gingivitis is reversible, but the bone loss that comes next is not, so call us if the bleeding lasts more than two weeks.

Happy Halloween. Floss before bed. 🎃

Five things you can do at home that can decide what we find at your next checkup.

Why is a dentist discussing supplements? Guess not everything is just brush and floss, eh?

I ranked 5 supplements by what the clinical trials actually show for your mouth.

These are all add-ons of course, never replacements for seeing your dentist and proper oral care. However many people and dentists don’t discuss them!

Comment SUPP and I’ll send something we started giving our perio patients to go home with.

Honestly I was impressed. Everyone pretty much nailed it. What should we do next? 😂 #dental #dentalfunny #brooklyndentist by @quentinsmile

The new Dyson electric toothbrush 🪥

Is it the future of brushing? Maybe. Is it too early to make any real conclusions without actually testing it?
Definitely.

There will always be a newer brush, more sensors, more features and more “smart” technology.

But the best toothbrush is still pretty simple:
The one you’ll actually use correctly, twice a day, every day.

Good technique + consistency will beat gimmicks every time.

That said... I’II happily put the Dyson to the test. If they send me one #dyson #dental #dentist by @quentinsmile

“Whitening toothpaste might be one of dentistry’s biggest scams 👀

Most don’t actually whiten teeth — they mainly remove surface stains, often by being more abrasive.

If you want a genuinely whiter shade, toothpaste usually isn’t getting you there.

So… is your ‘whitening’ toothpaste actually whitening anything?” #dental #whitening #toothpaste #educational by @quentinsmile

Let’s talk about your mouth. You track your blood and your sleep, why not pay attention to your oral cavity. There will come a day when salivary testing will be the standard of care, but in the meantime keep those gums clean and see your hygienist often.

Chronic gum inflammation is a low-grade immune activation with a standing invitation into your circulation. Not once. Daily, for years. And the cardiology literature has been quietly building a case about it for decades.

A new paper this month adds another brick.
Nobody is claiming a cleaning is a statin. Causation is genuinely still being worked out, and I’ll be the first to admit but the research is there.

Oral care is whole body care. Let me know if you guys enjoy the brief literature reviews #oralcare #oralhealth #dentalhygenist #dentalcheckup by @quentinsmile

Sounds far-fetched? The truth is your mouth is connected to a lot more than you think.

Just this week, another study added to the growing pile linking periodontal disease to higher risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. It joins randomized trials showing that treating your gums measurably lowers inflammation, improves blood sugar, and helps cholesterol and blood pressure, on a scale that surprises most people.

The fascinating part? A cleaning works partly by letting that inflamed tissue heal and calm down. It’s not just polishing teeth. It’s lowering the inflammatory load on your whole body.

So think of your next cleaning as more than maintenance. If you’re overdue, or you’ve been told you need a deep cleaning and put it off, this is your reminder. Reach out and we’ll help you get in #hygiene #dentalhygiene #dentalhygienists #brooklyndentist by @quentinsmile

Sorry @gabby_khab used your brush (hey I changed the tip)!

Since we’re here, let’s settle the manual vs electric debate.

The studies favor electric. Consistently. It removes more plaque and improves gum health over time, and that’s just what the data shows. So if you want the evidence-based answer, electric wins.

But here’s my honest “eye” test. I still use a manual brush myself. Technique beats hardware almost every time. Angle, time, coverage, consistency. That’s the whole game.

And here’s the part nobody selling you a $150 toothbrush wants to say. You can stack every gadget, every rinse, every supplement, every trending oral care product on the shelf. None of it will ever beat the basics. Brushing properly twice a day. Flossing. Every day.
That’s it. That’s the secret. It’s not sexy, but it’s true. #oralcare #toothbrushing #brooklyndentist #dental #nycdentist by @quentinsmile

That 2019 crisp listerine from Napa Valley hits well 😅

The more I read about mouthwashes and run some salivary diagnostics the more I understand they play a pivotal role (usually detrimental) in eliminating bacteria that’s beneficial for heart health.

You read that right. Let’s try something new here. Comment “mouthwash” and I’ll send over a nifty PDF with what to avoid and what to use 👅 #dental #brooklyndentist #smile #mouthwash by @quentinsmile

Kinda chic, honestly.
