The odds are against them - but failure, is not an option.

After postponing Whats Good Music Awards when the fifth wave struck, Phat and his team continue to face an endless stream of challenges - loss, media outrage, and tragedy plague the event as bureaucracy and regulations threaten to cancel the show.

But this dream is bigger than one man. For themselves, for the culture, and for the chance to bring Hong Kong hip-hop onto the stage they deserve - the show must go on.

We are each our own.

To make sense of the world, we separate people into divisions, placing them into individual boxes and neatly labelling them as good or bad, us or them, the same or othered; arbitrary words given meaning only by people’s fear of the unknown and their distrust of the unfamiliar.

But we are one.

If you mean to divide us through difference, then we will unite in our diversity.

A choir is fullest when ringing with the combination of different harmonies, rich with vocal textures, a melodious joining of the different sounds that emanate from each individual - all the colours coming together to form a rainbow. Together, they create something beautiful.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What we see – is our vision. It cannot be forced upon and nor should it be. What we wish for – is the recognition of differences, of situations and of circumstances as a gateway to an empathetic world.

The world we envision - without divisions, without labels, where people are free to discover and explore who they are without the need for others’ permission or approval. To find a voice that is yours and truly yours, and to have support and aid in navigating the treacherous terrain of self-discovery.

To know that, when you’re ready to take off your masquerade masks, people will celebrate you.

Through music, there is magic - a voice that speaks to the deepest, most human parts of us, that compels us to open our hearts and listen with every fibre of our being. It speaks to a part of us that needs no explanation, a side that seeks only to connect - this is the side we speak to when we are sharing our music to the world. Where reasons and rationale fail, music will speak in our stead.

We enter this world alone, but our journeys are meaningful because they are shared. Our sameness or difference do not define us; what we can create is bigger than any one individual.

Together, we are one.

Fear rules everything nowadays.

We keep our true selves tucked away, wearing certain things, speaking certain words, out of fear - fear of being judged, fear of being ostracised, fear of being different. We’re afraid that the truth of who we are will be too much for people to accept; that who we are simply isn’t enough for everyone.

The first people who created the ballroom scene - they were afraid too. Thrown out onto the streets of Harlem for being gay or trans amongst a sea of working-class black and Latine families, faced with homelessness, impoverishment, and the looming threat of violence for simply being.

But even as it cost them everything, they didn’t hide. Instead, they came together. They danced. They vogued.

Voguing provided a sanctuary for the downtrodden when the world had shut their doors to them. Voguing built houses, and in turn our communities built homes - homes that supported and uplifted one another in their most authentic creative expression of themselves; a home to rest and to hold and to simply be, away from the the world and its demands of what you should and shouldn’t be.

When I felt like I didn’t belong, voguing took me in. When I first encountered it in Taiwan all those years ago, I could see it so clearly in every movement, in the way dancers walked and talked, in the togetherness and camaraderie of ballroom - I could see me in all of them. It became an obsession, and it became my purpose - just as voguing saved so many beautiful souls in decades before, it could do so again in the city I call home.

When I vogue, I am the best version of me - strong, confident, exuberant in my craft.

When I vogue, I am not afraid.

Live a lie long enough, it becomes your reality.

I was everything they wanted me to be - bright and expressive, from a decent family, with decent grades, and a decent amount of friends. I was well-liked and accepted – for being someone else.

Music was my window into the real me. When I sang Mariah Carey at the top of my lungs until my voice echoed through the school halls, I wanted to shatter the perfect illusion of who I pretended to be. If you could gift me your acceptance, then accept the real me instead.

Barnaby was a dream. A kind, generous, exhilarating dream that showed me the easy tranquillity of unbridled acceptance, and the dizzying fullness of being loved for me. Our life together was a hidden dream - our little oasis, where I was me and he was everything I never knew possible.

But he wasn’t a dream – and his passing was the cruellest awakening. What we shared was real, but I had nothing to show for it, just bitterness and regret to be hidden from the world again. What we had and what we could’ve had, was beautiful - and beautiful things need to be shared.

So I shared. I shared our love, and you, and me - in our entireties, in our truths, and in my music, the windows flung wide open for everyone to see because I could not live in a world where our love was kept hidden anymore. I sang so the world could know us; so that the world could know me too.

Living my truth has not been easy. I am simultaneously too much and never enough, caught in the in-betweens of what people are willing to accept. But when I’m bold, and expressive, and liked today, I’m liked for me.

The real me –

Unapologetic, uncompromising, and unwavering me.

The truth will set you free.
