From 3D scan to a replacement truck wheel cap. 🚛

Using @quicksurface3d , we reconstructed the original two-part wheel cap as one clean CAD model ready for 3D printing.

The original part was warped, so simply copying the scan wasn’t an option. We used a reliable region as the reference and rebuilt the cap around its intended circular geometry.

Cross-sections → revolved geometry → trimming → patterns → shelling → fillets → deviation check → ready CAD. ✅

Reverse engineering meets the next generation of engineers. 🎓

We’re proud to have supported @shining3d at the 2026 National College Students' Advanced Drawing & Product Information Modeling Competition — International Track in Nanjing, China.

Students took on a real reverse engineering challenge: working from 3D scan data to reconstruct accurate digital CAD models.

The numbers speak for themselves:

🔸 80+ schools joined the training
🔸 Around 200 teams participated
🔸 114 schools advanced to the finals
🔸 1 hour 40 minutes to complete the final reverse modeling challenge

More than a competition, it was an opportunity for students to develop practical skills in 3D scanning, Scan-to-CAD, geometry reconstruction and reverse engineering — workflows they’ll encounter in real engineering and manufacturing environments.

A big thank you to SHINING 3D, the organizers, educators and every student who took part. 👏

We’re excited to continue supporting initiatives that bring practical reverse engineering experience into engineering education.

Should your CAD model match the 3D scan exactly? 🤔

Not necessarily.

A 3D scan captures the part as it exists — including wear, deformation, damage, and manufacturing variations.

But reverse engineering is often about something more: recovering the original design intent.

Sometimes that means rebuilding clean, nominal CAD geometry instead of simply chasing the smallest deviation.
