WAIT WHAT! It won 🤯 Blown away to receive the news that my Gold Whisky Tumbler was named amongst the top 25 designs of 2024 by Western Living Design 25 Awards. There were over 600 entries that showed off incredible, smart and cutting edge design across Western Canada. Humbled (to say the least) to sit amongst such talent.

If you’ve been around here for some time you’ll know this shiny piece has gone through some edits and revisions including being completely shelved and almost tossed for the first year of it’s life. This is the latest edition and I love to see that it still turns heads. Thank you @westernliving for loving this piece as much as I do!! I guess this means I’ll be needing to make more to refill my stock. Back to getting my hands dirty! 🙌

I’ve included a link to the article in my bio in case you’re interested 😊 by @quinspired

The idea of making a ceramic lampshade has been burning in my brain for years now. It’s well about time I made it happen. This is my first attempt. It’s rough and organic with plenty of room for refinement, but looking at it delights me. I’ve always been a sucker for interesting and beautiful interior lighting fixtures and the thought of making one out of clay always gets me excited. I have a feeling there will be many more iterations of this pendant light coming! What do you think - could you see something like this in your space?

A step away from my usual wheel throwing to some hand building to work on this idea for an incense box. My biggest challenge was how to keep the small lid from constantly falling out of place. The leather tie seemed like a natural solution and I love the aesthetic combination of leather with ceramic. The interior is glazed and exterior left raw, along with my finishing brushwork I’m very pleased with the end result. 🙌 by @quinspired

QUINSPIRED X SATSUKI Collab 🍶 featuring 10x uniquely designed sake sets. One of my favorite forms to make, I threw the sake bottles and matching cups on the wheel using Canadian speckled clay. Once bisque fired @chef.sakemaymay528 individually illustrated each one with Shodō, Japanese calligraphy - an art form she’s been studying for years. My gold brush stroke added the finishing touch to each bottle and truly made this a beautiful collaboration celebrating our shared love for Japanese craft, art and food.

Chef May will be debuting these in her restaurant @satsukicalgary to feature her premium sake and pairings. If you love sake, or are interested in learning more, Chef May is a wealth of knowledge and her passion for Japan’s cuisine and culture runs deep. Honored to have worked on this very cool project 🥰 by @quinspired

As promised from my last post, here’s a very quick tutorial on how I made these 4 layer spheres bowls. Wheel thrown in a single enclosed form they are cut into layers and bottoms added. Meticulously, dried trimmed and fit together I still dealt with the challenges of cracks and warping. There were many redos over many weeks and I wish the process was as smooth as this video appears, but real life is never the case, is it? 😅

In the end I’m really in love with the final collection of 10 bowls and I can’t wait to discover how they will be used by @chefdarrenmaclean at @eight_cdn by @quinspired

One of my most challenging commissions to date 😅 I cant’t lie, these 4 piece dish sets pushed my wheel throwing accuracy, and hand building skills to the max. They had me riding an emotional rollercoaster as I would go from assembling the perfect form, to taking it out of the kiln with cracks or warping thus having to start again from scratch. With all the challenges I learned a ton, and gained even more in patience and positive self talk, lol.

I’ll share more about the actual process of making these in a separate post. For now, I’m just so happy with how they turned out. I especially love seeing that brushstroke join each layer into a cohesive unit - a beautiful and very useful design element.

I can’t wait to see magical creations these pieces will hold in the hands of @chefdarrenmaclean at @eight_cdn. 🥰 by @quinspired

Poetry in motion.

Nothing rushed. Nothing forced. Just clay, movement, and years of mastery distilled into sculptural forms that feel both ancient and unmistakably contemporary.

@quinspired

Vases that make you stop. Exhibited in our gallery. Made for your home.

Making a bunch of these sake bottles for a very cool project! Using a pound of clay each, the form gets challenging when i collar in the neck after rounding out the belly. I find it a balance between managing the clay’s thinness and moisture, also directing the clay “up and in” rather than just in, if that makes any sense at all. Of course, adding my finger dents at the end is just so satisfying. Can’t wait to share more about what these bottles will become 🙌

Oftentimes I need to step away from a piece for a time, and only when I come back to it is when I see its beauty. I loved the overall shape of this large vase but I when it came out of the kiln, all I could see were the cracks that formed. Where is the undo button for ceramics? ↩️ I’ve already made a mental list of how I’ll be approaching my next sculpture differently - how I’ll make my coils, how dry/wet to keep the stoneware, how much to compress, how thin to keep the walls. With each new work I get a peek at the future of my expanding art and direction. Thank you for following along! by @quinspired

Kiln openings can either give gifts or break hearts. I’ve had both this week…. But this morning I’m thankful that we got some gifts 😍. Another small batch of gold tumblers and they are so beautiful I can’t resist showing them to you straight out of the kiln, still warm in my hands with no help from nice lighting or cameras.
