We rarely inherit culture through instruction.

More often, we inherit it through the objects we live with.

A stool.

A cloth.

A pot.

A tray.

They carry ideas about beauty, hospitality, identity, community, and belonging.

We have been paying attention to those ideas since 1975.

Some objects are still speaking.

Every civilization leaves behind its monuments.

It also leaves behind the technologies that sustained everyday life.

We're learning to pay attention to both.

What does clay know that we have forgotten?

This Saturday, Quintessence presents Unity Forged in Clay, a solo exhibition by Chris Ekuafeh.

More than an exhibition of ceramics, it is an invitation to reflect on memory, transformation, and the enduring power of clay.

Join us as we explore how one of humanity's oldest materials continues to shape the way we see ourselves and one another.

Opening
Saturday, 26 September 2026
5:00 PM

This is my invitation to you for my upcoming solo exhibition.

With Unity Forged in Clay, I plan to present a body of work built around the experience of Unity. What is it? What it means to us individually and as a collective? What actually holds a people together, even across all of our differences?

Clay for me has always carried memories that help me tell my stories, and this show is my attempt to put that memory into form through pieces that speak through fracture and repair, pieces that touch on culture and the things we share underneath it all.

Opens Saturday, 26th September 2026, 5pm at the Quintessence gallery, Victoria Island, Lagos.
If you're in Lagos this weekend, be my guest. Let's dialogue and toast to Unity Forged in Clay.

ORI II (An Exhibition of Contemporary Sculptures)

The second edition of ORI turns our attention to the head, something we often overlook when we talk about health.

This group exhibition brings together works by Nigerian artists exploring the head through different perspectives, opening conversations around health, memory, identity, and the knowledge carried through generations.

The edition of ORI was presented alongside the Lagos Arts and Health Festival (LAHF) as the gallery brought the two programmes together for a shared conversation around art, culture, and health.

If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, come by and experience it before the week runs out.

Over the weekend, Quintessence hosted the 2nd edition of the Lagos Art and Health Festival @lahfestival - two days of art, conversation, connection and celebration.

The festival brought together artists, creatives, art lovers, and voices from different spaces to explore the connection between art, health and the human experience.

The weekend also marked the opening of ORI II, a group exhibition of sculptures, which opened alongside the festival and added another layer of artistic expression to the celebration.

From thought-provoking conversations to moments of connection and celebration, the weekend was a beautiful reminder of the ways art can inspire, heal and bring us together.

2,809 ceramic beads.

Each one inspired by a palm kernel shell.

Innovation does not always begin with new materials.

Sometimes it begins by seeing familiar materials differently.

At Quintessence, we call this Material Intelligence.

A pot is easy to dismiss as an object.

It is harder to recognize it as accumulated technology.

Every curve, every opening, every thickness of clay reflects generations of observation, experimentation, and refinement.

Long before museums, clay was preserving food, cooling water, carrying harvests, and shaping everyday life.

Before Masterpieces is an ongoing inquiry into the everyday technologies that made civilization possible.
