Artists are our storytellers. They reflect the best and the worst of us—our flaws and weaknesses, our struggles and our successes and always our hope. Twenty-seven portraits. Thirty-one artists, makers, builders and doers.

For San Diego Magazine’s Arts Issue, Matt Furman photographed some of the people helping move the city’s creative culture forward.

What I love about these portraits is that they don’t simply document the artists. They give each person room to truly be seen.

As Troy Johnson, Publisher and Chief Content Officer of San Diego Magazine, said:
“For an issue this big and crucial for the arts and culture in the city, we needed someone who specialized in making the artist feel most like themselves. Make them feel seen. That’s Matt.”

This issue is more than a celebration of the arts. It is the story of San Diego in a moment of awakening and the incredible people making sure its creative spirit cannot be overlooked. I’m going to share a few of Matt’s portraits over the next week, along with some of the stories behind them, so stand by.

Growing up with horses, I remember that golden early morning light, the textures, the grit and the familiar scent of that crazy barn. These images bring it all right back.

They show the care, trust, tenderness and dignity within the work, not just the horse or the job. Seeing these moments and feeling the heart -

You can always tell when someone loves what they’re shooting.

Will Saunders @willsaundersphoto just wrapped I AM FORCE for Force of Nature, three days between Malibu and Ventura, and it’s some of the most alive work I’ve seen from him. Not the biggest setups, not the most planned light. Just a photographer fully in it.

The images that stop me aren’t the hero shots. They’re the ones that happened in between, when everyone relaxed and nobody was performing for the camera anymore. That’s usually where the real photograph is hiding.

Matt Furman can make himself at home in any city, but New York has always felt like his second home.
These images of SNL’s Marcello Hernández were shot for T-Mobile while bouncing around the streets of SoHo. The weather was crazy hot, the sidewalks were packed, and it was one of those nonstop New York days where you’re moving from one location to the next without missing a beat... and having a blast.

Marcello kept everyone laughing between setups, making it easy to capture moments that felt effortless and full of personality.
One thing I’ve learned over the years...
You don’t just hire photographers because they make beautiful pictures.
You hire the people you trust to navigate a busy production with calm, confidence, and a sense of humor. The ones who can adapt when the light changes, the schedule shifts, or you’re shooting through one of New York’s hottest summer days.

That’s Matt.

Whether he’s shooting in New York, San Diego, or halfway around the world, he brings an easy confidence to set that lets everyone relax, stay creative, and focus on making great work.

Rob Adamo’s images don’t just show you something.

They go deeper — tapping into feeling, memory, and those moments in life that somehow stay with us forever.
His images bring in all of the senses.

You don’t just see his work — you step into it. You can almost hear the laughter, feel the heat in the air, smell the fireworks, and feel that deep boom in your chest.

For me… it’s sparklers. I love sparklers. Something about holding one and drawing light across the night sky brings out the kid in me every single time. I always just giggle like I’m 8 again.

Blue skies by day. Big colors lighting up the night sky.

Summer nights, laughter, freedom, and that little bit of magic that never gets old.

Rob sees in pictures.

He has this incredible way of shooting through layers to pull you into the frame, giving you that intimate feeling of being there — feeling the freedom and living in the moment.

He captures that raw Americana spirit — nostalgic, cinematic, and full of freedom in the heart.

Moody Monday.
I’ve never actually called anyone a buckaroo, but for some reason this feels exactly right.

A buckaroo isn’t just a cowboy. The word comes from the Great Basin cowboy tradition — places like Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho — and carries a little more grit, heritage, and soul.

That feels so Andy Anderson to me.
Andy is so well known for his portraiture and his ability to capture the grit, soul, and character of the American West.
And the black and white… it just hits differently. Raw, moody, timeless.

So yeah… this is one hell of a buckaroo.

Identifying talented folks who not only fit the creative, but can expand it with their own perspective and instincts is one of our favorite parts of the process.

That’s exactly why we wanted to work with @willsaundersphoto. From the beginning, the goal wasn’t to hand over a rigid shot list or over-direct every frame, but to create space for moments to unfold naturally and let the process respond in a more organic way.

The stills really became a defining part of the campaign because of that approach. The kind of imagery that stands out not because it’s louder, but because it feels true to the world it’s building. by @quitzenelson
