We asked ourselves a question a couple of months ago. What if we took pretending to be Queen to the next level?
This is the answer.
A Kind of Magic is 40 years old this year. So we went into the studio and recorded it note for note. Every harmony, every guitar part, every small detail we could find in there. That, for most bands, would have been plenty.
Then the idea of recreating the 1986 promo video came up, and nobody had the good sense to talk anyone out of it.
So we did that too. Frame by frame.
It has taken two months, an unreasonable quantity of attention to detail, and the time, talent and goodwill of a great many people who had absolutely no obligation to get involved.
A huge thank you to:
Peter Morrissey, who spent many nights sitting with Brian creating the amazing animations and special effects that brought the whole thing to life.
Michael Corcoran, who filmed, edited and graded the video, but not before taking the time to map out every single scene from the original so we could recreate it.
Stephen Butler and everyone at the Set Theatre Kilkenny, for very generously letting us take over their wonderful auditorium and pretend, briefly, that it was 1986.
Emma, Orla and Jens from the Dublin Gospel Choir, for the fantastic backing vocals and for adding some actual class to proceedings.
Michael Richards at Trackmix Studios, for his patience in the face of our obsessive need to get the music as ridiculously close to the original as we possibly could.
Aidan Mannion at Set for Stage for all the authentic props.
And finally, our friends, colleagues and families, who have spent the last couple of months putting up with strange requests, days disappearing to filming and recording, bags full of inexplicably rotten clothing, dodgy beards, and four grown men taking pretending to be Queen much, much too seriously.
Thank you, all of you. For the gear, the locations, the expertise, the long days and the patience. None of it was your problem, and you took it on anyway.
And thank you to Queen, for making something 40 years ago that was worth going to this much trouble over.
We hope we’ve done it justice. by @qweenband
