Photographer @steven_menendez_official shares images from his “Fire Island: Bohemian Queer Art Paradise” portfolio with The Queer Review shot in & around Cherry Grove, Fire Island.

Steven Menendez: “I spent over a decade living in Cherry Grove on Fire Island & fell in love with its history as a natural sanctuary that has inspired queer artists for over a century. I loved hearing stories about the island before there was electricity or phone lines. It was a place & time when societal constraints & judgements could melt away, allowing one to merge into the majesty & creative freedom offered by this bohemian queer sanctuary.”

“Some of my favorite legendary artists from earlier times who created on the island include Paul Cadmus, Jared French, Walt Whitman & George Platt Lynes. I was inspired to create this series of portraits of beautiful Randall to pay homage to the simpler bohemian times on the island where queer art & nature collided on this little magical strip of Gay paradise.”

Steven Menendez shares a new study in male beauty portfolio with The Queer Review shot in October, 2025 in New York City.

Steven Menendez: “I created this series of images because I wanted to show the soft & tender side of male beauty. I was inspired to create this portfolio by American cultural anthropologist, author & speaker Margaret Mead’s (1901 – 1978) groundbreaking studies on gender.”

“Mead believed that gender is largely a cultural construct, shaped more by social expectation & upbringing than by biology. She argued that the wide variation in gender roles across different cultures showed that traits regarded as masculine & feminine are not inherent but molded by society. Through her research, she observed societies where men & women shared traits considered feminine or masculine in her own culture, concluding that “human nature is almost unbelievably malleable, responding accurately & contrastingly to cultural conditions.”
