Surplus An Exhibition by Rich Justis
Zekes Chesapeake - all November long with an artist reception Nov 8th.

I have a terrible habit of overcrowding my journals, though I suppose it’s just a symptom of how I occupy a room. You learn to do a swift, survivalist sort of math when entering spaces: you count the chairs, you measure the warmth, and occasionally, you realize you are the extra variable. The surplus member of an otherwise orderly assembly.

This exhibition is a visual catalog of that specific, lingering excess.

Surplus presents the jagged, half spoken sentences and midthought wretchings that were supposed to stay buried beneath more productive ideas. We expend so much posture archiving our victories, yet our remainders built us too. These black and white drawings are the honest scraps left on the cutting room floor.

A masterclass in restorative erosion:
Two acorns in a codependent death spiral, a million barnacles doing their wet, frantic breathing on dead wood, and a cliff face spitting five-million-year-old bones into the tide. There is a radical, quiet peace in watching the world aggressively wear itself down.
You don’t have to fix your head today; just sit on the sand and let the river sand off your sharpest edges.

VOL. 3 Artist Spotlight: @r.justis757
Norfolk writer and artist Rich Justis creates lo-fi line illustrations and quiet, narrative tension.

Creature Comfort captures a stark home caught in the slow, creeping embrace of something far stranger from below. And looks at what happens when the safe spaces we build become shared with the things we try to keep outside. taken in Commonwealth Tattoo Gallery Norfolk by @r.justis757

Equinox spread plus some angel babies.

Seven of Swords - sometimes winning the war means abandoning the battle
Knight of Cups - you’re already carrying the magic you’re looking for
Justice - success isn’t getting what you want, it’s giving the world what it needs
Two of Swords - the view from where you are is beautiful if you let yourself look
the Foolish Man - it’s ok to have no fucking clue what you’re doing

60+ zinesters. Thousands of zines. Norfolk Zinefest ‘26 felt like my own personal Coachella.

We arrived early, set up our tables, and tried to take it all in. Then the doors opened. Over a thousand people flooded through the afternoon, and the room was absolute electricity.

Holding the fest inside the Chrysler Museum, a modern titan in the heart of Norfolk’s art scene, carried real weight. Setting up our lo-fi print works inside those grand galleries served as a quiet, physical reminder: self-publishing belongs firmly within art history.

Four relentless hours from 11 to 3: talking about zines non-stop, connecting with makers across the region, and fighting a losing battle not to spend all my money on everyone else’s publications. I traded my own work, discovered incredible artists, and spent time taking in the exhibitions.

To see sixty distinct approaches to publishing under a single roof is genuinely mind-expanding. I packed up feeling inspired, energized, and deeply reminded why I love physical print.

Norfolk Zinefest is all of you. Thank you.

Midlife turmoil. The unbridled self doubt of an honest and traveled man. The purchase of luxuries to compensate for an unfulfilling life. I have experienced none of these.

I’m a man continually faced with the discomforting excitement of growth. I stand at a point of near-explosion. I strive to embody the ideal that a man can become bigger than the battles he fights.

My weekly output observing the local fauna and the local architecture: a collection of ink lines, some garden debris, the performative chaos of a fire breathing clown on roller skates, and a general sense of wonder at why a dragonflies’ wings aren’t worshipped as high tech hardware. by @r.justis757

The carceral system is entirely engineered to turn human beings into institutional surplus. To bury them under the weight of forced silence and pretend they don’t exist.

A stamp is a ridiculously small thing but it’s also an absolute lifeline.

Come out to Eleanor’s Owl Party where every dollar you spend with me will go directly to the @humanitiesbehindbars pen pal project.
