Black August Celebration shirts 2026

Theme: RESILIENCE: REST. RESIST. REBUILD.

I had the honor of collaborating with @ieblackworkercenter to craft and produce designs for @socalbwhub Black August event!

Black August is an annual commemoration for Black political prisoners, freedom movements, and resistance against racial, colonial and imperialist oppression around the world. Originally established to celebrate the struggle of the Jackson Brothers from 1971, there are many events and special dates that happened throughout the years in August. From Aug 1 (Emancipation Day) commemorating the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833 to Fred Hampton’s Birthday on Aug 30. We remember the lives of ancestors like Marcus Garvey, Emmett Till and Sufiya Bukhara as well as important moments in history like the Haitian Revolution and the Watts Riots.

The design is of a prisoner Canonized with a halo, marked with a revolutionary crown (the black beret) bending the bars to freedom. In the foreground the scene is marked with a solid ankh, the Egyptian key (symbol, letter) of life, the rite of passage, icon of black cultural heritage. 1971 marks the origin of Black August, and 2026 is now. We look out and forward, we must shape the future.
