Dear Football,

What a journey it has been. From rec leagues, to academy tournaments, and back to rec leagues. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.

You were never just a sport. You were structure in times of chaos. You gave me purpose on mornings I didn’t feel like moving, and taught me how to keep going anyway.

I miss the routines. I miss waking up at 5:00 am for an 8:00 am game 100 miles away. Practicing at the same time, in the same place, with the same people. Laughing with teammates before practice and running sprints with them at the end. Fighting for trophies, medals, and recognition, but ultimately always fighting just to play one more game.

I’ve won, and I’ve lost. I’ve been captain, and I’ve been benched. I’ve whooped in great moments and weeped in tough ones. But I have always learned.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the impact that you’ve had on my life, so here’s to teaching me discipline, patience, respect, and self-control, along with many other things.

Here’s to you,
and to whatever comes next.
