Flower bouquet studies.

I got myself a few old Kinfolk magazines recently, I always was a big fan of the whole movement, and now it felt right to indulge into the nostalgic feeling they carry. For those who have never heard about it - it's a seasonally published magazine about small gatherings and slower lifestyle, founded in 2011.

When I think about "old times" where everything was different, I usually imagine something from the 1920s to the 1960s, which was yes, about hundred years ago. What I didn't expect was how different was the feeling I get from the magazines that are not even fifteen years old. Oh, my. The world has changed, and changed quite a bit.

Maybe it is the whole Kinfolk narrative that makes me feel so, maybe the world actually was a nicer place, I can't really recall that. I can remember life in 2012, I can remember how I thought it was fast paced and hard. Little did I know back then, from here 2026 it honestly seems rather slow and easy. Kind of the usual - I wait for the good times to come, later realizing that well, those were the good times and I was waiting.

One thing for sure, I'm still in love with the idea of gatherings, and I know for sure that I haven't had many since I moved to Finland. Well maybe I can't fix the world, and it might even be that it doesn't need fixing, but I totally can cook something good and invite people to my place and enjoy some entertainment together. And who knows, maybe it'll fix the world or at least make it a little bit better.

I've told you many times that breakfast is important but never really talked about why it is so. Well back into my cooking days - 5 to 7 work day weeks, 14 to 18 hours a day - I wasn't really having breakfast at all for like 10 years straight. Well, I was home about 2 or 3 a.m. and then it was like waking up and going back to work and doing it all again. Long story short, I started to appreciate days off and wanted to somehow celebrate the days I'm home.

Back in the day I was renting an apartment near the marketplace in the rather shitty building, god damn those never stopping winds that were piercing the whole place non-stop, but that's not the point. There was an old lady selling raw milk from the farm nearby, but the smallest amount to buy was 1.5 liter - needless to say that even with all my love for milk that's too much to drink before it goes spoiled.

Well now we just need to combine a bottle of curdling milk, desperate wish to have a nice morning, and a bit of cooking skill - and voila - there, on the 6th floor of the panel apartment building my breakfast pancakes were born. I carried this idea carefully through the years, cherishing every nice morning moment, and when everything is equal I'll prefer pancakes for breakfast over pretty much any other dish. Sweet memories.

On the rollercoaster of the current days it's easy to forget how to get some peace of mind. Usually sticking to my well-established routine saves me but one week on the road - new schedule every day, none of my regular things available, not even breakfast bacon, for lord's sake - and my little perfect world I've created crumbles under the pressure of intense workload and newspaper headlines.

Nice to be back finally and slowly gain the ground back under my feet. Those books, meticulously collected over years have a fleur of nostalgia and old wisdom, cooking with copper pans singing to the tune in my head is twice better than eating in any fancy restaurant, flowers and plants surrounding every room bring peace and I couldn't be happier than when I watch a good game of StarCraft.

Maybe all the adventures are just supposed to remind me that it's insane how beautiful life can be in its simplest form? Or maybe they are supposed to make me a stronger man one way or another? God knows what's the purpose of this life. I'm honestly getting increasingly a man enjoying being home and I kinda like it as much as I'm afraid of it.

What if some things were good right away and don't need any evolution under current conditions? Sometimes I feel like I'm stuck in my routine, mostly on the weekends. Being the most wonderful activities to do, like cooking a good breakfast, cleaning the apartment or listening to a few of the carefully selected records - somehow it feels a bit off since these are the same things I do over and over again.

I'm desperately looking for a change, but most of the change is within the current system - like change the record to the other one, or cook a different dish. This is not structural changes but only fine tuning and minor drift away from regular. Maybe the key to happiness lies in embracing what I already enjoy rather than constantly seeking for something new? Instead of forever fighting for something better and making your way through hardships - choose what suits me the best?

Well this idea has a downside: consider there are nearly infinite ways to do my weekend morning. There should be better ways, but trying them one by one, not to mention the process of figuring out what are the possibilities, is somewhat heartbreaking - while there might be infinite amounts of better ways to start my day, there are for sure infinite ways to do it worse, and I'll inevitably hit them as well in my search.

So here I am with the dilemma of free will. Yes, I'm free to choose, but some choices are bad and some are unknown. But some are proven to be good, so why not stick to them? I just wish it'll work the same way with me watching reels after a long day. Like seeing one good one - and stop, no more scrolling.

Today I remembered that I actually have a medium format camera and it's a nice one - Zenza Bronica SQ, quite a beast and quite a beauty. On top of this I remembered that I have a nice amount of medium format film in the fridge door, waiting for me to remember about all that since last January. Well maybe maybe I'll actually get back to it.

Those images I did with Canon P and Japanese Summilux, so it's 35mm, just a nice crop. God, that was a beautiful tulip bouquet. That part reminds me I rarely have flowers at home nowadays, which is also quite a pity. Let's say now I have an improvement plan and wait a bit for the brighter future to come.

Life has been somewhat uneven lately, so as a real son of my generation, I decided to cure it by starting to post here on Fridays. Maybe not exactly on Fridays, but somewhat weekly and somewhat closer to the end of the week. Maybe it'll push me to load a canister of film into my trusty Leica or Canon or maybe it'll serve as a journaling that I have long forgotten, idk what I was thinking starting it, maybe I just wanted a notepad in a cool leather case, not sharing my sacred thoughts.

Anyways here's a few photos from the Holidays roll, all warm and cozy Kodak Gold by the one and only @carmencitafilmlab , all taken with the Canon EOS 300x. Even though I quit cooking for money a long time ago, I guess it was like 8 years or so, my life still seems to revolve heavily around food and cooking. Probably the proverb is true and you barely can teach a new trick to an old horse. Or maybe the food is just nice.

Maybe, it's even more about getting around in this world where food delivery services and pre-made ultra-processed food rule the show. Like today I made a pot of chicken stock and some rice and it felt really mellow. The apartment is a bit warmer now, smells nice, feels cozy and feels like home, not just the place where I chill from time to time. Who knows, but one thing is for sure, I need to hit that gym and probably even the swimming pool, since the food I make is still delicious and my floor scale shows me numbers I don't enjoy. taken in Tampere, Finland by @r0man0ff

Remembering the autumn vacation time. Gulf of Persia, endless sun, variety of cultural change, endless crowd on the cruise boat and loud music surrounding me. Meeting family after years of only video calls and messages, dates sweeter than first love and drinks and food I never have in my normal life. Quite a change, although only for a short ten days.

All the Gulf countries love the x-ray scanners so much that your stuff can get scanned twice to enter one museum, hence the excess of grain on the images. My trustworthy EOS 300 that allows you to just press the button always feels like an ultimate continuation of the hand and mind behind it. That's all the man needs being hungover and rushing through the crowded sightseeing routes.

Wearing a T-shirt in the middle of November is worth all the trouble possible, but I always realize it only when coming back to the darkness of the land that welcomed me, marking the first snow layering the ground. Now with -18°C outside and barely +18°C inside my humble apartment under the blanket I gather the warmth of the photos I've made and promise myself to be back there again one day to bathe in the arabic hospitality. by @r0man0ff

France. I'm feeling ill today, and unable to go mushroom picking in the forest, I spent the entire day studying French wine and other trends bordering on the sommelier's art. Along the way, I had a lot of thoughts, and I'll share them so they don't just hang.

From that first time in 2013, when I came to Paris with wet feet, looking at the Seine in the pouring rain on a covered boat, standing in line at the Eiffel Tower, and getting lost in Montmartre, waiting for locals at the bar to lead me back to the hotel, to the last time, when I drove across France from north to south, saw a castle on the sea, saw the fields of Normandy, drank goat-flavored cider, ate scallops from the fresh catch, picked olives in Provence, and took a boat to the Château d'If. Through all 10 times I've been to Paris, through the friends I made along the way who showed me the beauty of this land.

With all this, I realized that, as usual, I didn't really understand anything. It works like that in any field: the more you know, the more you realize you don't really know anything. And when you know very little, your knowledge is simply not enough to realize you don't know anything. It's like when you come to Russia once and you're like, "aha, vodka, bear, balalaika" — and by and large you're right, but don't even try to believe you understood anything. Everything is much deeper and more multifaceted.

Well, that's not the point. I often feel like here in Finland I'm missing something living, something genuine. Life seems too refined, or something. Although I go mushroom picking in the forest and visit farmers markets, it doesn't feel simple or eclectic, although it is quite interesting.

And then I remember Cancale in France, where I used sign language to buy a loaf of hot buckwheat bread at a small bakery, some super-salted butter at a local shop, a bottle of wine at a small, dark store, and then went to the sea, where they sold me a dozen of the freshest oysters and rented me a glass for the wine. For some reason, back then, looking out to sea at the oyster farms and the tractors busily driving along them, I felt this oneness with the infinitely eternal.

And I think, one day I'll return. taken in Cancale, France by @r0man0ff

Foods from spring. All on film - brighter, saturated ones are Ektar, faded ones are expired Superia.

It's been a while since the last one. I made this post and Instagram immediately told me that - will you believe it?! - posts with audio are getting more views. Well maybe maybe, but I feel lately that I miss times when this app was quiet. Scroll the photos, like the ones that you like, much less annoying ads, I feel like they are half of my feed now, and good old silence. For real - it's a photo sharing platform. But at least we have a repost feature now, much wow.

Well that was a grumbling part, and I definitely can continue this for at least a couple more paragraphs, but I guess I should complain less. Adapt or die - and I'll probably adapt to ads, algorithms and noises coming out of the app I can't really abandon, it's somewhat of the generational trap for millennials, we have to flex on our mostly dead Instagram accounts, that's our destiny, no way out. If someone can benefit from it, doesn't it just make sense?

Honestly the post was supposed to be about much different stuff, mostly about how surreal life feels lately, how much money shops ask for the beef (that part needs to stop, seriously), how lonely a man can feel in a room full of people and a bit about looking for the greater meaning for it all while most likely looking is the meaning. But somehow this "add music now" robot feature dragged me out of these thoughts. Technically, it was the whole purpose of making this post, so it all worked out as it was supposed to. But no music on my posts, not yet. by @r0man0ff

I recently came across the idea that my generation is the last one blessed with memories of how it was before the information flow become unbearable. And it gives me a lot of inspiration now. I firmly believe that we are heading into more or less global "return to quality", and I'm excited to try.

Listening to music in whole albums instead of smartly crafted ai-playlists, reading paper books instead of scrolling reels, cooking meaningful dishes instead of ordering delivery and so on. Going for a walk without headphones, listening to your own thoughts. Writing your thoughts to the neatly arranged notebooks made from the most amazing paper. Having a bottle of luscious wine and dancing in the kitchen, taking photos on film because of the waiting time, the list goes on and on.

We've been there, we already know what to do but somehow lost it, at least I did. Now bit by bit carefully reestablishing routines that make me happier I started to distinguish better and worse ways to spend free time. To be honest, it didn't make me happy immediately, but it totally made me happier that I was. It's the way, and it only can be covered if you're walking on it. taken in Tampere, Finland by @r0man0ff

Time to praise the vintage CCD sensors. Recently I got myself a Leica M8 and slowly but surely trying to figure it out. It's a bit tricky to use and seems to be a very stupid purchase on paper. Like if you read the specs, and just consider that it's a digital camera from 2006 on a 15 hundred bucks price tag it is not looking appealing.

However, and it's not for everyone, it packs a lot of joy such as unusable display which makes it almost same as film camera experience; unlimited memory with 16gb SD card (and the thing even takes 128gb, I tried); full on Leica quality feeling, like you know, brass and stuff and heavyweight body; and of course it opens you the universe of M-mount lenses, but you obviously can't pair with my favorite one.

Back to the sensor features - it's old (can we already call it vintage if it's over 18 years old?) CCD that was made by Kodak, which packs that authentic "film look" which was surprisingly hard to get with color photos until @arnaud_barrault told me what to do, big thanks to him! On top of that, according to some experts, the black and white photos are probably looking cooler than even the Leica Monochrome ones. Pair that goodness with fast Canon rangefinder lenses such as 35mm f1.5 and the famous Dream Lens - mamma mia, simply gorgeous 🥰

I have a feeling that this whole thing about film vs digital is mostly over and shifting more towards human made vs AI made. And it feels good to create something by myself in this fast paced age of generative technologies. Also the breakfast photos can't wait three weeks for me to finish the roll - the stability of my inner universe relies heavily on posting my weekend breakfast on Instagram, so no time to wait! taken in Tampere, Finland by @r0man0ff
