three sculptures, publication

the carabiner originally comes from the world of climbing. bur a carabiner clipped to a belt loop is also used as a subtle symbol of identity, community, and queer culture. as this symbol spreads beyond queer communities, it loses its hidden function. these kind of symbols also find their way onto the internet, among other things through memes. queer people must continue to find ways of recognizing one another through codes that are subtle enough to feel safe, yet meaningful enough to create connection.

after spending my summer making my friends listen to kwn on repeat in the car, i started the what is fashion minor at hku. during that semester i experimented with new materials and sewing (!!!), talked to a lot of people about being queer, thought a lot about carabiners and ended up making three sculptures and this publication.

this is a research between the visual language that’s being used online among queer people and traditional ways of flagging, such as carabiners.

its made up of three different sections. the first part consists of carabiners of people in my life, and a short story about our connection. the second part consists of the three carabiner sculptures i made, with ascii translations. the final and biggest part of the book includes memes about being queer. i collected these with help of my community.

everything is laserprinted in pink on 120g fuego felt white. the cover is light pink and has a silver foil print on it. this publication is part of #wlw?, which is the work i showed at spinning substance, shaping stories @ag.hku

seems only right i finally got to posting this work in #lesbianvisibilityweek! shout out all the lesbians who helped me with this by @r1612942

custom weerwolven of wakkerdam cards for my dear friend karlijn 💚 the cards are risoprints with a transparent layer of screenprint on top to stop them from smudging and make them fully usable. renamed some of the characters and added some inside jokes, very very fun project! by @r1612942

Overwhelmed & Understimulated
televisions, DVD- and mediaplayers, video’s

After being surrounded by fake data, an abundance of social media platforms, existential thoughts, brain rot, TikTok self-diagnosing and constantly having to adapt to the latest meme language, we finally found a way to navigate the digital landscape! Never mind… it changed again. Is it my best friend, or my worst enemy? Who are we online? Are we a hyperbole of ourself? Am I even real within this overconsumption of sources, and how do these sources shape my identity? When will the digital world cease to exist? Or will it be a part of us forever? Does the algorithm know who I really am inside?
