The Long and Winding Road – Lesley Pearse

In this honest and deeply personal autobiography, Lesley takes us through a life that began with childhood heartbreak and took her on a journey full of unexpected twists and turns.

From her early experiences in an orphanage to the swinging sixties, the pain of giving up her baby son for adoption, and the many different jobs she tried before becoming a successful author, hers is certainly a life less ordinary.

I found it fascinating to discover the woman behind the books, and I admired her willingness to share the painful parts of her past alongside the happier, more colourful moments. The details of her early life and the choices she faced stayed with me, reminding me how much our experiences shape who we become.

An emotional, candid, and sometimes surprising read, this is a book for anyone who enjoys discovering the real person behind a much-loved author. It left me with an even greater appreciation for Lesley and the winding road that brought her to where she is today.

Rules of Prey by John Sandford ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rules of Prey is the first novel in John Sandford’s hugely successful Prey series.

The story is set in Minneapolis and follows Lucas Davenport as he investigates a series of murders committed by a highly intelligent and methodical killer who has created his own set of rules for choosing and eliminating his victims. What begins as a seemingly impossible series of crimes gradually develops into a tense and increasingly personal cat-and-mouse game between the investigator and the man he is trying to catch.

One of the strongest elements of the novel is the way Sandford allows the reader to see both sides of the investigation. We aren't simply following Davenport as he pieces together clues; we also understand the thinking and meticulous planning behind the murders. That dual perspective creates a constant sense of tension because the reader often knows things that Davenport doesn't, while still being left wondering how - or whether - he will put everything together in time.

Lucas Davenport is an especially compelling protagonist. He isn't the stereotypical straight-laced detective. He's intelligent, observant, unconventional, and willing to bend the rules when he believes it will get results. There's a dry humour to him too, which gives the darker subject matter some balance, while his determination makes him an engaging character to follow.

Sandford's writing keeps the pace moving without sacrificing the investigation itself. The clues unfold gradually, the tension builds naturally, and there is a real sense of danger as Davenport gets closer to the killer. Rather than relying purely on shock or graphic violence, the novel creates much of its suspense through anticipation.

An interesting aspect of the series is that, having been written in the late 80s/90s, it will take some readers on a nostalgic trip back in time, while younger readers may wonder how anyone ever solved a crime without Google, cell phones or the Internet.

Well, that was fun! Thanks to Jared and @ansongordonart for the art lesson.

Charcoal was definitely a little harder than I expected, but I can honestly say I got more comfortable as the lesson progressed.

I know mine's not great, but I'm going to keep practising!

If you don't know Anson’s art, check out his page. His work is beautiful!

What a game yesterday's rugby was! 🏉

England v New Zealand was an absolute thriller ~ end-to-end action, the lead changing hands, and then that dramatic finish from Zoe Harrison in added time. You honestly couldn’t have asked for a more exciting ending! What a match! ❤️

The Red Roses did us proud! 🌹

The Keepers by Alys Mackay

This is the first book in The Abandoned Gods series, and it's a wonderfully atmospheric mix of dark fantasy, romantasy, mythology, magic, and adventure.

The story follows Tsunala, who wakes with no memory of who she is or how she came to be in such a dangerous situation. As she begins trying to piece together her past, she finds herself caught up in a world of forgotten gods, powerful magic, monsters, secrets, and people who aren't always what they seem. And the more she discovers about herself, the more complicated and dangerous everything becomes.

I really enjoyed the characters, particularly Tsunala, whose journey of discovering who she is gives the story so much of its intrigue. Then there’s Aridanos, who is much more mysterious and unpredictable. And Kitor, who is half human and half Fae ~ another character I found fascinating.

The mythology and world-building were probably my favourite parts. There’s something wonderfully eerie about the idea of forgotten gods and ancient powers, and Mackay creates a world that feels both beautiful and dangerous. I loved the way the fantasy elements gradually unfolds rather than having everything explained at once ~ it kept me curious and wanting to know more.

However, there were moments when I had to keep going back and checking details as there are a vast number of characters and details that at times confused me. This wasn't a deal breaker for me, just an observation.

Mackay finishes this book on a cliffhanger, and thankfully, book 2 ~ Guardians is coming out soon!
