OUT NOW: Finding Our Way Home Through the Stories of Those Who Came Before Us

What if understanding where we come from can help us better understand who we are?

In this episode of Exit Strategy, Stephanie Garry speaks with Rabbi Andrew Kaplan Mandel, a passionate genealogist, about the power of uncovering our family stories—and the deeper connections those stories can reveal.

Together, they explore what happens when we look beyond names and dates to discover the lives, journeys, struggles and dreams of those who came before us.

Because genealogy isn’t simply about looking backward. It can be a way of finding our place in the Jewish story, connecting generations, and deciding what we want to carry forward.

Our stories didn’t begin with us. And perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give the generations that follow is to make sure those stories are remembered.

Shabbat did not begin as any of us would have liked. But as I smelled the spices during Havdallah last night, I was able to breathe in the sweetness of the holiday: all of the signs of our @centralsynagogue collective resilience. As soon as our heroic head of security removed the man who disrupted the service on Friday, we relit the candles and began again. Rabbi Houser led us in some much-needed breathing. Cantor Pearsall and our musical team kept the service going with the joyful sounds of Shabbat. Rabbi Thau adapted her sermon in real time to speak beautifully to the moment. We celebrated a wedding couple. We concluded with our arms around one another for the Traveler’s Prayer. Our congregants were with us every step of the way. We had to add chairs on Saturday morning because we had such a full house, and people had so much to say about the Talmud stories we were reading that we kept the conversation going at the Oneg. We celebrated August birthdays. Everyone is okay. I know we will keep discussing the best security approaches for the moment and the state of the city and the scourge of antisemitism and the need for more mental health support and more. But know this: we will not let our light go out. by @rabbiakm

Got to explore “the world’s borough” with @centralsynagogue members on our Summer Staycation to Queens, where we visited everything from the palatial mausoleums of Temple Emanu-El’s 19th century elite, to the modern-day Bukharian community in Rego Park, to the site of the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows. It made me appreciate even more how my home has been a site of welcome, celebration and reverence for so many. by @rabbiakm
