I celebrated my birthday this weekend— I have so much to be grateful for at the start of this new year and my new personal trip around the sun. Besides the incredible abundance of love that surrounds me, the enormous gift of my life is that I get to tell stories and make movies, something I’ve loved so much for as long as I can remember. In 2021, I started filming what would become my third feature film, a verité documentary called “Sugar Babies,” the story of Autumn and her close knit group of friends and family in Ruston, Louisiana. What started out as a film about Autumn’s online sugar baby operation became a story of what it means to find your identity and dignity growing up poor in America.

I couldn’t be more proud of this film or the team that helped me make it. A valiant effort on every single level over the course of 4 years of filmmaking. On January 27, “Sugar Babies” will have its world premiere in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. This is a life dream. I can’t wait to share this very special film with you all.

Thinking about the wild acid trip that was the making of my documentary film BAMA RUSH today, as my iPhone reminded me that 4 Augusts ago I was in this blonde wig (thx @hairjordan + @tiffanipatchett!) with my incredible film team, going undercover to film rush at the University of Alabama in the hot, hot heat. We like to call this “method vérité documentary directing.” 🤪🤣 Despite the cease and desist, a fake TikTok rumor and all the backlash, BAMA RUSH lives on!! Our film is right up there on the @hbomax homepage with Robin and Zendaya 🤩

It was super stressful at times, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. I’m so proud of what we made and thinking today about all the young women who let me into their lives.

Made it to our favorite spot and had a mini film festival in the living room, an enormous yard sale and lots of beach time. I keep every notable hand written note I have ever received from everyone I love, have loved, respected and admired. I have culled them down but I still have boxes and boxes of letters and cards. I learned this from Nana Claire. She was a letter writer and since she and my grandfather owned multiple card stores, I guess it was technically the family business. It was a real joy to find every card I ever sent her after she died. In December it will be 16 years since she left this physical plane and I am very happy to know that I always told her how much she meant to me, and that nothing was left unsaid— I cherish the living proof. I told her over and over again how special and lucky l felt that she was my family. I wanted her to know we had a Seder in London. I was so lucky to have a best friend that was also my grandmother. I keep the screen shots of her emails on my phone. The grammar alone was an avant-garde performance. The way she wrote like she spoke. Rachelaaa. Jewish syntax. The weather I shall not mention (it rained). Grief is so abstract and out of nowhere on weds it hit me, like a gut punch. I miss her so much and there are all of these things I wish I could show her and tell her and I know she is here, floating in the ether but I would love to call her on the phone. I know you all know what I mean. I never thought I’d survive her death and here I am, life goes on and I have her manicured hands, size 4 fingers and my niece has her nose. I have kept her close and she has become my muse, my mood board and my spirit party. Nana Claire 4-eva 💗💌 by @rachelfleit

I am obsessed with and inspired by interiors since forever and on a perpetual location scout— looking for the light and the layers and the color story everywhere, every day. Here are some scenes and sets I love in order of appearance: Z & K’s epic staircase upstate, the kitchen in reality bites, Yoko’s kitchen in Atami, Japan, D & J’s old house in Stony Brook, the pet store window on 6th Ave, my old therapist’s waiting room, collage night in my bk apt in the 2010s, disco ball rainbow bookshelf, A portal to Nana Claire, century village, A hotel lobby in Colorado Springs, the afternoon light in 214, J & G’s upstate, Nana Claire’s Guest Room and that bedspread til the end of time…. by @rachelfleit

“I feel afraid right now but not as afraid as I’ve felt before. It’s a new kind of fear, it’s like I know I need to do somethings different and I have to find the courage to do this. To take the action, to take control over the things I have the ability to change in my life. This feels like when I knew I wanted to stop wearing a wig but was afraid to do it. I must remind myself that I had to find the strength inside me to do that. Nothing external helped me do that - I want to write & direct & perform. I think in movies - I think I want to do performance art, short stories & quirky dreamy films.”

I found this in a notebook from the early 2010’s. I have been writing things down for as long as I can remember. Call it what you will - a manifestation or a prayer… These are the skins that I leave behind, to find one day in the future, to remind myself that anything is possible — and usually when I let go of the fear and just take the actions, things happen. I am a writer and director today… “in movies.” I have not given up on my performance art dream……….. You never know….. 😜 by @rachelfleit
