A bit of lore: @rachelherron_ and I met at @aura_coffee_bk circa 2024 during the first ever dankies RED EYE event ☕️🍃 She asked me if we had ever done an open mic before, and when I told her “no”, she offered to host it herself. WOW. Community! Since then we’ve had annual open mics. We missed her last year cuz she was out of town, but we’re super grateful to have her back as our returning host! Everyone say THANK YOU RACHEL 💛🎙️

My heart is broken. After 93 incredible years on this Earth, Lucille Herron, the family matriarch, my safe place, my grandma, has passed. She was more than just a grandmother, she was provider to all. My dad, aunts, uncles, and everyone in the neighborhood called her Muh because she was a mother to every person who came into her life.

She was so of full joy, spark, memories, grace, and love. I never really dreamed of being a mother but I did fantasize about being a grandmother so I could be just like her. Someone who brought people together, no matter the varying dynamics that were present. For years, the Herrons would reunite in June in celebration of her birthday, and in celebration of the beautiful lineage that started with her.

I’m sad because I miss her, but I’m sadder because it feels like a golden thread that connected me to her and to my ancestors has been severed. The life she lived is not for the weak. To grow up in those days meant one thing and one thing only, survival. And boy did she survive. She takes with her pain, pleasure, wisdom, secrets, darkness and the light she shone so brightly, even in her last days.

As I write this and fight the tears that well in my eyes, I think of one time I was trying to get to know her and asked her of her childhood. She was guarded and didn’t get into much detail, but she told me how much she loved sitting by the fire after a long day and letting the warmth caress her feet. So here’s to an eternal blessed evening by the fireplace, warmth cascading over her being, while embers flicker into the infinite night. taken in East Saint Louis, Illinois by @rachelherron_

I’m thrilled to announce IDOL CHASER was awarded the Audience Choice Award as part of the 2024 @katrafilmseries. Awards don’t mean everything and sometimes they don’t mean anything. But other times, they mean there are people around you who see the work and dedication you’ve put into something, and they were moved, even if only for a frame.

Here’s @pancynop (producing extraordinaire) and me receiving the award. And here’s some behind the scenes shots from two years ago when I still had no idea what would become of this rewarding albeit challenging project.

And for anyone out there questioning whether you should do that thing you always wanted to do. Just do it (no Nike). taken in Brooklyn, New York by @rachelherron_

Two years ago I scraped together some money (with a giant thanks to my family) and an incredible group of people and I shot an even scrappier short film. I’m delighted to announce IDOL CHASER will be premiering at the @katrafilmseries next week. It’s an honor and blessing to be able to create anything with the way the world works, so I’m humbled to say the very least.

Screening: Mon 9/30 @ 6:15 pm - Regal Essex Crossing
129 Delancey Street

My therapist once told me that I’m sometimes vague about my ambitions. Maybe they’re right. But what am I supposed to say? Hi, I’m Rachel. I’m a writer. The kind of writer where I still don’t make enough money to support myself from writing alone but one day, I’ll be the other kind of writer. The kind of writer who’s guzzling down oysters and sipping champagne while zooming down an inflatable water slide hanging from the side of a 70-meter yacht off the coast of Saint-Tropez all because of something I wrote. But I can’t say that. Because then I’d sound like a delusional capitalist. What’s worse, being vague or delulu? Eat the rich. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @rachelherron_

It’s raining. No, it’s sprinkling.
I read something somewhere that said it’s not uncool to talk about the weather. I remember thinking, if I’m having a real-life, face-to-face conversation with someone and we’re talking about weather, something’s wrong. And then this year started. I got laid off from my job. And time sort of folded in on itself like a crescent roll. And now the constant rain, confusing wind, and sunbeams of spring are what conversational dreams are made of. Talk about the tulips. It’s cool, I promise. by @rachelherron_
