@rachellviolin—the sole Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient in Baroque music—and harpsichordist @davidbelkovski brought a wide-ranging program of violin sonatas and Baroque gems by Biber, J. S. Bach, Leclair, Corelli, and more to our intimate Weill Recital Hall.

The duo, who are also artistic directors of @twelfthnightensemble, were joined by cellist @colemanplayscello. 📷: @jennifertaylorphotography taken in Carnegie Hall by @rachellviolin

Been one year of saying goodbye to my Shoozie, but now I have an oil painting to commemorate her. I miss her every day 🌈

Thank you to @rosangelaitice for creating such a special painting that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life and to my sis @bgirlmiwa for helping get it all the way from Brazil to NYC. ❤️

These past two days of knowing Stanley is gone have brought back so many memories of him. I am not the best writer, but I wanted to share some of my fondest memories of him.

I met Stanley my first week at IU, right after a rough orchestra rehearsal. A friend mentioned there was an option to switch to baroque orchestra, so I found his room and knocked. I told him to please let me in! He laughed, probably at how desperate I was, and handed me a baroque violin and an exercise by some guy named Geminiani, and told me to come back in a week. The next week, surprisingly, he called me a natural, and told me I was in. that was the beginning of the end for me 🙂

Every week I looked forward to my lesson with him. He was tough but hilarious, endlessly generous, and full of phrases like “PPD” (perfect pitch disorder), and some I’m still trying to grasp…my favorite being

“All music is in 1, except when it’s in 3, which is often in 2.”
And many more I’m still trying to learn!

When I got into the Leipzig Bach competition, he had me stay in Bloomington that summer and taught me all the repertoire himself. I rode my bike to his house nearly every day, and honestly stopped caring about the competition, I just loved the hours learning from him.

Four days before the IU Beethoven concerto competition, he told me he’d been one of the first to play it on period instruments and had written his own cadenza. I absolutely needed to hear it so he dug up an old cassette, and I learned it by ear that night in a friend’s car (only place that I could play a cassette!). I performed it in the competition 3 days later, and still perform his cadenza every time I play the concerto.

He kept supporting me long after IU. Last fall he and Elisabeth let me stay in his house while I taught for Mark Kaplan’s studio, and Elisabeth drove me to visit him so we could catch up and share stories again.

I’ll miss randomly texting him any musical question and always getting invaluable advice back. I’ll miss telling him milestones in my life and sharing performances with him over the years. I’ll really miss you, Stanley. Thank you for setting me on this path I’m on now, and for changing my life. 🤍 by @rachellviolin
