While driving with dad on a road trip in Punjab, had an urge to find a place for a cup of tea ☕️, stumbled upon a board by #archealogicalsurveyofindia just 35 kms from Mohali on Chandigarh Ludhiana highway.

What we saw was an ancient Buddhist Stupa, situated in Sanghol, Punjab and first occupied by the Late Harappans of Harappans / Indus Valley Civilisation around 2000 BC

See the location on the tag 🏷️

The site lies on the ancient northern route Uttarapatha which connected Taxila with Mathura via Indraprastha, Rohitaka and Sanghol.

It also lies on silk route.

During the Kushana period Sanghol flourished as a prosperous urban center comprising Buddhist Viharas (Monasteries), Stupas and palaces.

The Department of Archaeology & Museums, Punjab, & Archaeological Survey of India have conducted several archaeological excavations here between the years 1968 to 1990 which revealed cultural sequence ranging from late Harappan culture to medieval period.

Sanghol excavations has also yielded one of the largest botanical finds ever recovered from any excavated site in Indian sub-continent.

The remains of barley, wheat, millet, khesari, field pea, lentil, chick pea/gram, horsegram, barseem and seasame have been recovered from the Harappan/Bara period.

The main botanical finds from Kushana period include spices like cumin, coriander, fenugreek, garlic, onion, black cumin, black pepper, long pepper, ginger, nutmeg, javitri, tobacco and betel nut.

The site shot into prominence in 1985, with sudden discovery of a treasure trove of 117 beautifully carved stone slabs, which belonged to Mathura school of art.

Sometimes sudden roadside stops can educate you of a history lesson that one had read long ago and forgotten.

Continuing on the Sunday Stroll Series in Lucknow

Building no 2: Farhat Baksh Kothi फरहत बक्श कोठी

Situated on the right bank of Gomti river in Lucknow, this building was the residence of General Claude Martin in 1781. It was constructed in Indo-French style and was earlier known as Château de Lyon or Martin Villa.

Three storeys building, with two of its storeys being basement storeys utilizing the waters of the Gomti to cool the building during the worst of the summer heat.

Visitors to the château had described it as a ‘perfect museum’ and this seems accurate as we learn of the contents. There were specific areas of the estate that included the usual establishments of stables, boat-house, a well-stocked cellar, the armoury, the kitchen, the library and the picture-gallery. But there was also a riot of curiosities – telescopes, magic lantern slides, shells, skeleton, ‘electrical’ equipment, rare coins, Chinese figures, fireworks and a stuffed monkey among others things. Somewhere in the building was a large and elaborate toy theater that Martin had commissioned from Paris, with moving scenery and a barrel organ that played the latest tunes.

The château was re-named Farhat Bakhsh after Martin’s death, when it was bought by the Nawab Saadat Ali Khan, brother to Asaf-ud-daula.

Nawab Saadat Ali Khan (1798-1814), during his serious illness, was advised by the British resident to shift in this building. He shifted and resumed his health and renamed this building as Farhat Baksh (pleasure-giving).

Later on Nawab Saadat Ali Khan beautified it further with denticulate arches and Awach style of doors and windows.

Lazy Sunday stroll on the streets of Lucknow and admiring its beautiful buildings…

Building 1: General Wali Kothi جنرل کی حویلی जनरल की हवेली

Situated on the bank of river Gomati, this double-storied palatial building was constructed under the rule of Nawab Saadat All Khan (C.E.1798-1814). The first resident of this Kothi was Shas-ud-daulah, Nawab Saadat Ali Khan’s elder son and chief of the army. The house was meant for the accommodation of Commander-in-Chief or General; hence it is also called General Wali Kothi.

Building is constructed in Indo European architecture and is adorned with multi- foliated and horseshoe arches and fire-places. The building was damaged during the revolt of 1857.

Later in 1920 it was taken over by Uttar Pradesh Police and this building was known as S.P. Kothi. In 2010, Archaeological Survey of India took control over the building and has since then carried out extensive conservation to the building.

Location : 📍 Next to Chhatar Manzil, VW5J+VFR, Qaisar Bagh, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh 226001
