I’ve got an omakase recommendation for ya: The Chemistry Room in New York City. I adored the modern interior and intimate ambience. The sushi chef was also amazingggg … engaged in conversations with us, detailed with plating and extremely friendly. Last but not least, every single dish from our 15 course omakase experience was exceptional! You must add this one to your list if you’re an omakase fan.

Today, I am sharing my recipe to a Chinese treat that gives me extreme childhood nostalgia. I grew up eating 𝗕𝗔𝗞 𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗚𝗢𝗨/𝗕𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗚𝗔𝗢 aka 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗧𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗚𝗔𝗥 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗞𝗘. My immigrant parents worked 6-7 days a week, but always managed to squeeze in family time and bringing home goodies for the kids, and this was one of them! My dad brought home Bak Tong Gou along with soy milk, red bean pudding and prunella vulgaris tea from a popular tofu shop in Chinatown, which never failed to brighten our day. Sadly, now that I’ve moved into the boondocks, it is nowhere in sight … BUT with this recipe, I can share a piece of my childhood with my kids as well as reminisce the pastimes and good ol’ days with my parents and siblings. Let’s keep this recipe alive for many more years to come.
𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗢𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗠.𝗖𝗢𝗠 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘 𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗢 𝗢𝗡 𝗠𝗬 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗕𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗟, 𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗛 𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗜𝗢.
𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀!

Do you love mochi donuts 🍩? If so, you need to visit Alimama in New York City’s Chinatown. They don’t have an extensive menu, which I like. What’s even better is you can walk away with a signature box that includes various flavors of their donuts and cream puffs, alongside a free box of taro munchkins for a limited time. It was a cold and rainy evening when I arrived, so I also ordered a hot reserve milk tea that was really yummy. 😋

If you’ve never cooked with bitter melon before, don’t let the name scare you away! Although it may be an acquired taste due to its natural bitterness, this knobby green vegetable has a distinctive taste that becomes surprisingly delicious when balanced with savory seasonings, aromatic garlic, and rich black beans.

🫘 Find my easy recipe for Bitter Melon Stir Fry with Fermented Black Beans on rackoflam.com, linked in bio and here: https://rackoflam.com/bitter-melon-stir-fry-with-black-beans

I took my girls to The Local Table, a new restaurant in Syosset, Long Island serving brunch! We ordered East Coast oysters 🦪 which were so fresh and so clean clean, steak and eggs, Eggs Benedict and pancakes 🥞. Everything tasted amazing and the staff were so friendly 🥹. I’ll visit again for dinner 🍽️

My dad recently gave me a 4+ pound winter melon. Given temperatures have been dropping in New York, I went ahead and used it to make winter melon clam soup, a dish my parents used to serve us 😊. Full recipe is now on rackoflam.com, linked in bio, or comment SOUP and I will DM you the direct link.

Who’s with me? I grew up watching the Pei Pa Koa commercial with Do Do Cheng 😂. I’m not surprised the product is still around because this syrup does wonders! It’s under Asian Products on my Amazon storefront if you’re interested!

And just like that, September has come to an end. Time certainly flies. My daughters and I enjoyed the last bit of summer heat, celebrated birthdays, prepared for school and am getting ready for Halloween! Costumes are purchased and candies have been ordered. Welcome October! 🎃
