“I am incredibly proud of Nijmegen and the Four Days Marches. Organising the event is a huge undertaking, and for the Red Cross it is also their largest event in the Netherlands. The fact that it takes place here in Nijmegen, and that Radboud University contributes to it, is something I find very special.

The Four Days Marches are truly in my blood. I am from Nijmegen, I helped build the Heumensoord camp during my student days, and this year I am taking part for the twenty-fourth time. I started when I was just 11 years old. The editions that stand out most in my memory are the hundredth edition, when I walked the 55-kilometre route, and the silent finish following the MH17 disaster in 2014. And whenever I set off at around four o’clock in the morning and walk across the campus, with music, dancing and celebrations taking place around the Gymnasion, it makes me happy every single time.

In my role as Sports Facilities Manager and Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Prevention Officer, I contribute to the Four Days Marches in another way as well. I advise on safety and operational feasibility for events ranging from sports tournaments to the Radboud Intro. This year, I looked at how we could accommodate 600 beds for Red Cross volunteers in the Gymnasion, as well as their logistics centre and supplies.

This is the largest project our team has ever undertaken. For two weeks, from set-up through to dismantling, we provide round-the-clock staffing for reception, facility management and security, ensure that sports activities can continue to take place, and my colleagues provide meals for the Red Cross volunteers from breakfast through dinner. Up until just before the Four Days Marches, I was heavily involved in the preparations. Now I am focusing on the walking itself, and afterwards I will be helping with the dismantling. It is fantastic to see how everything falls into place after so much preparation. I am genuinely proud of what we have achieved here together.”

🔬🎉 From a Kidslab on Mariënburgplein to lectures on Stadseiland Stek: Radboud University is prominently present during the Vierdaagsefeesten.

Our reporter Iris popped along to the Kids- en Jongerenplein, where science and innovation came to life through little experiments, hands-on activities and the live children’s podcast ‘Professorproef’. She then headed into town towards Stadseiland Stek, where music sociologist Valerie Knöpker explained how music can bring people together – and sometimes drive them apart.

Looking for something a bit more in-depth amidst all the music, performances and festive hustle and bustle? For the rest of the week, you can also head to Stadseiland Stek for free talks by a Radboud scientist and the ‘Professorproef’.

"Bringing different worlds together so that they can strengthen one another – that is what my work as Project Manager of the City Deal Kennis Maken Nijmegen network organisation is all about. I develop the approach that enables students to contribute to societal challenges in the city and ensure its practical implementation.

As part of this network, Radboud University works alongside the Municipality of Nijmegen, HAN University of Applied Sciences, ROC Nijmegen and Yuverta mbo. Students from vocational education, universities of applied sciences and the university collaborate across disciplines, learning from one another while tackling real-world challenges commissioned by the municipality or community organisations in the areas of health, social inclusion and the living environment.

One inspiring example is the redesign of the outdoor space at Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital, where students from three educational institutions worked together to improve the garden for staff. Another multidisciplinary project focused on increasing young people’s turnout in the municipal elections. And during Wellbeing Week, ROC Hair Care students gave young people haircuts, while Radboud students from Spiritual Care and Psychology talked with them about wellbeing.

Students often tell us these projects help them understand how their studies can contribute to society and give them a greater appreciation of students from other educational backgrounds. I am proud of that, because it reflects the essence of ‘Connected for Impact’. Real impact is created together with regional partners. By strengthening one another, new insights emerge. That is the power of connection."

Nowadays, it goes without saying that we look things up on the internet, but things used to be very different. On 7 July 1986, the domain name kun.nl was registered for the Catholic University of Nijmegen, the predecessor of Radboud University. Hostnet.nl revealed this year that this made the university the seventh of the very first organisations in the Netherlands to have its own .nl domain name. That says a lot about the pioneering role played by universities in the development of the internet.

In the 1980s, the internet was not yet a place where you visited websites, explains university archivist Marianne Waldekker. Domain names were mainly used by system administrators and universities, as the World Wide Web did not yet exist for the public. It was no coincidence that universities were represented so early on. Academics and technical services used the network to share knowledge, data and computing power. The University Computing Centre in Nijmegen also played an important role in this. System administrators saw opportunities for practical applications and registered the .nl domain name. A domain name had to be short and practical, so ‘kun.nl’ was an efficient name.

When the name changed from the Catholic University of Nijmegen to Radboud University, its online identity changed too. In 2004, the university switched from kun.nl to ru.nl. According to Jeroen Buijs, a member of staff in the Marketing & Communications department, this was a massive undertaking. Not only technically, but also in terms of communication: after all, a domain name is linked to discoverability, recognisability and image. For instance, they had initially considered using run.nl, but this name was already owned by a sports organisation. Ultimately, ru.nl, a name they felt was a better fit, became the new efficient domain name.

The website’s design has also changed over the years, as can be seen via the Wayback Machine, an archive of old web pages. The website’s development illustrates how, over forty years, the internet has transformed from a technical network into a public space, with the domain name serving as a recognisable anchor point.

Summer has officially arrived, also on our campus ☀️🌴
