✨Hello, dear community! Big news: Soft Rebellion is having a name change. The new name, drumroll please, is 🥁🥁🥁

Radical Whimsy.✨

💫Why the change?
I’m feeling more confident in who I am as a professional, and this word authentically captures who I am and what I offer.

💫Why “whimsy”?
As a drama therapist, therapeutic play practitioner, and fat-affirming care professional, my entire career is built around utilizing embodied play to support kids and adults in expressing their truest, most authentic selves. My services range from individual therapy and groups to trainings and drama clubs, and so much more. All of it is rooted in play. All of it is rooted in whimsy. All of it is a radical act of reclamation and liberation.

💫Fat liberation:
Whether I’m talking about it directly, or these words never come up in our work together, it is truly the heartbeat of everything I do. Play is not possible without liberation. In order to be free in our bodies, we have to acknowledge the systemic barriers placed on us: white supremacy, misogyny, heterosexism, transphobia, and so many other forms of oppression that limit our ability to play.

Sometimes in my work, I’m talking about body liberation with you directly. Perhaps we’re working in an individual therapy setting to recover from eating disorders, heal the trauma of experiencing anti-fat discrimination, or learn to set boundaries with family members around food and weight talk. Other times, I’m rolling on the ground with a group of children, making ridiculous noises and laughing at ourselves together.

To me, all of this work comes from the same place, and it feels deeply important that fat liberation is always named specifically when talking about my work.

In my practice as a therapist, body liberation is at the core of my work yes, even when we’re not even talking about our bodies.

Why?

Our bodies are our homes. They hold our stories about ourselves, about others, about the world we move through.

Our nervous systems shape the landscape of our lives. They influence how safe we feel, how we connect, how we protect ourselves, how we show up. Do you shrink in order to stay safe? Do you brace or harden to avoid being hurt? Do you disconnect from sensation to get through the day?

Healing requires tending to the stories that live in the body.

We also cannot access this wisdom without acknowledging the systems that have shaped and constrained it. Racism, sexism, anti-fat bias, ableism, and many other forms of oppression live in our environments and in our bodies. These forces create barriers that impact safety, identity, embodiment, and self-trust. Naming and examining the impact of this reality is a vital part of healing.

Whether I am supporting someone with ADHD, anxiety, or life transitions, we are always working with the nervous system. We are always listening for what the body is communicating. Because lasting change happens when mind and body are in relationship when we build safety, awareness, and choice from the inside out.

Your body holds SO MUCH wisdom and I am so grateful for the opportunity to help you access it. 💛 by @radicalwhimsypdx

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is an eating disorder that impact people of all ages. What often looks like “picky eating” is a serious issue that can lead to negative health consequences. There are generally 3 types of ARFID presentations and some are a mix. These include: sensory sensitivity, lack of interest in eating, and fear of aversive consequences. These types often involve extreme picky eating, low appetite, or fear of choking/vomiting. ARFID is not driven by body image concerns and is often (but not always) seen with neurodivergence such as ASD and ADHD. The stereotype that only kids have ARFID is incredibly dangerous and prevents teens and adults from getting the nutritional and emotional support that they need. Additionally, ARFID is often not seen as an eating disorder that “goes away” or can be “grown out of.” Recovery can look like long term symptom management. 💛 by @radicalwhimsypdx

This is one of the most harmful narratives perpetuated in eating disorder spaces. Weight restoration is about restoring your body to a sustainable level of functioning. For many of us, this means restoring into a body that is bigger than you are comfortable with. Due to our culture’s systemic fat shaming, it makes complete sense that gaining weight at all can feel distressing, let alone expanding into a larger body.
AND the reality for most people is that landing somewhere on the fat spectrum is where your body is best able to function and thrive. Roughly 70% of adults fall into the plus-size category. This is why dismantling anti-fat bias needs to be at the core of eating disorder recovery work. Destigmatizing, normalizing, and celebrating body diversity is absolutely vital in therapy spaces. Without fat-affirming care for clients, regardless of body size, relapse becomes far more likely. by @radicalwhimsypdx
