CRJ is honored and excited to be one of the 21 arts organizations receiving support this year. AiS fosters cross-sector work through the arts by supporting the integration of arts and culture into multiple disciplines critical to the health and well-being of Coloradans.

AiS will support our upcoming program “UNLOCKED VOICES: Stories of Healing and Change from Inside & Beyond Prison Walls,” an audio storytelling initiative that empowers currently incarcerated Coloradans to create and share personal narratives about their experiences of accountability, healing, and transformation.

In the Colorado Matters feature, you’ll hear the voices of Herbert Alexander, our Co-Director at CRJ whose story is the centerpiece of HABITUAL… and, of Adriana Vance, who speaks about her husband Cleveland Vance’s ongoing habitual offense sentence. There’s a bunch more that you’ll hear in the full series: legislators, currently incarcerated folks, victims’ advocates, Herbert’s family, as well as a legal historian at CUNY Law who reveals the shocking history behind habitual offender statutes like Colorado’s.

In this episode, Seth and Lucy are joined by Dr. Neil Gowensmith. Dr. Gowensmith is a professor of Forensic Psychology in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver. In 2014, he conducted a study to measure the outcomes of College Gateway graduates. Specifically, he looked at their quality of life and behavioral changes post-graduation. Tune in to discover what that study yielded and the recipe for the "special sauce" that helps Gateway do the work.

What makes Red Rocks Community College’s Gateway work? What barriers has it overcome? And what can it teach listeners across the U.S. about the role of colleges and universities in creating second chances?

Gateway answers these questions, uplifting the voices of the program’s students, educators, administrators, and advocates. Through their stories, we explore how education can be a bridge to stability, opportunity, and belonging.

House Bill 26-1017 now requires the Colorado Department of Corrections to provide people leaving prison with at least $100, free of any deductions.
Previously, much of that money could be withheld through fees before release.
Kyle Giddings of the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition breaks down this change and other key provisions of the bill in the latest episode of Up to The Minute.

Drawing from his own experience, Kyle explains how restitution payments often go to insurance companies rather than victims and discusses efforts to address this issue moving forward.
