How a Tour-Bus Joke Became One of Radiohead’s Most Uneasy Songs

The phrase “karma police” was originally a band catchphrase. Jonny Greenwood said they would use it on tour whenever someone behaved badly: sooner or later, “the karma police” would catch up with them. However, the lyrics take that joke somewhere darker. Yorke later described the song as being about stress and the feeling of people looking at you with hostility, and in another interview called it a song “against bosses” and middle management. Musically, the song’s piano riff borrows from The Beatles’ “Sexy Sadie,” while the key remains ambiguous and shifts throughout. Part of the song’s haunting quality comes from Nigel Godrich placing Thom Yorke’s voice through reverb, while a sliding melodic figure moves in counterpoint against the vocal. Another important studio development comes in the song’s destructive ending. Ed O’Brien created its foundation by driving a delay effect into self-oscillation, then lowering the delay rate to produce the distinctive “melting” sound. Yorke was still unhappy with the ending, so he and Godrich reconstructed it using loops and samples. By the final section, the song has stopped looking outward. The threats and accusations give way to “For a minute there, I lost myself,” while O’Brien’s delay and the reconstructed loops begin to distort the track around Yorke’s voice.

On the 13th of December, 1997 Radiohead was featured in the NME about their ongoing tour in support of OK Computer.

On 13 December 1997, NME featured Radiohead during their ongoing tour in support of OK Computer. What made the article particularly fascinating wasn’t the tour itself, but the glimpse it offered into the band’s creative process. Between shows, Radiohead were writing new material on the tour bus and demoing ideas during soundchecks. At the time, even the band didn’t know where these songs would end up. Some reports suggested they were destined for a new Radiohead album the following summer, while others claimed they would form the basis of an EP scheduled for early 1998. For devoted fans, however, this wasn’t entirely surprising. Radiohead had been developing new material on the road since the early stages of The Bends tour. What the article did reveal was the remarkable list of working titles already taking shape: “Man of War,” “Motion Picture Soundtrack,” “I Promise,” “True Love Waits,” and “Nude” (then known as “Nude/Neut”). Looking back, it’s fascinating to see so many future Radiohead classics existing only as rough ideas, still evolving between tour buses, soundchecks, and performances.
