Was a dream come true teching for @realtamiaworld & @therealjoethomas 🛠️

My mom played the @quincyjones “Jook Joint” cassette tape nonstop. Was so incredible seeing Tamia perform “You Put a Move on My Heart” in person. 🫠

When i was a teen we watched the video for “Im So Into You” (remix) with @myfabolouslife religiously. 📺

Joe had so many memorable songs from the 90s & 2000s. So many hit singles. Loved Big Pun 🕊️ and “Still Not a Player” 📼 🔥

I remember recording me singing “I wanna know” by Joe into the built in mic on my desktop computer when i was like 10. 🎙️ 👦🏽

i wish i still had the file. It was acapella 😭

Never ever thought I would get this opportunity! 🎼

My Childhood Dream was Music, 🎼

and Education Put it all in Motion 📚💫

If you feel stuck in life…(I do. Again)

I’d like to remind you (and myself), that inspiration: can happen in very strange places!

I was living in Tacoma, WA 8 years ago. On my 10th retail job. I had moved back home with my mom and was beyond frustrated.

I had been making hip hop instrumentals in my bedroom for 12 years. And I was tired of working dead end jobs.

I wanted to work with Snoop Dogg.

Broke and desperate for solutions, I took a personal development course from @tailopez called “The 67 Steps” and his influence is what turned me into a voracious reader.

The book that changed it all for me was “In The Shadow of Man” by Jane Goodall. And to this day, its one of my absolute favorites. 📕🐒

Jane Goodall dreamt about working with Chimpanzees since she was a child, so she decided to move to Africa, right out of high school! She went to work for Primatologist Louis Leakey as his assistant. And that put her whole life’s trajectory in motion. She caught malaria multiple times, camped in the jungle, studied the chimpanzees; never quit; and today she is THE authority on Primatology.

I decided that if Jane could brave the jungles of Tanzania with a high school diploma, then I could do Entertainment in Los Angeles with a GED and some Sales experience from Guitar Center. 🤷🏽‍♂️

The inspiration you’re looking for can happen: in very strange places! 💡

“The estates are gone; the power, the panache and the fear. But what the Hollywood Jews left behind is something powerful and mysterious. What remains is a spell; a landscape of the mind; a constellation of values, attitudes, and images. A history and a mythology that is part of our culture and our (American) consciousness.” - Neal Gabler by @radtherose

Been really enjoying classic TV & Film lately 🎞️ 😍

Just saw the original Cape Fear the other night and i still cant believe how good it is. I think its better than the Scorcese x DeNiro remake (which i didnt even think was possible!)

At the root of my substance abuse was a person struggling with self acceptance.

And deep down I feared this would all be over before i found the courage to accept myself, and express myself taken in Jackson, Tennessee by @radtherose

Ive had a slew of rough interpersonal conflicts with family and also at work this last year. And I’ve had an intuitive hunch that my poor Esteem, and poor Self-Acceptance may be at the core of all this.

Theres a lot i could say about my experiences, but the most valuable thing this book has given me is SIMPLICITY in understanding what “Self Esteem” is, and how to go to work on it.

Branden defines Self Esteem as (1) Self Efficacy and (2) Self Respect.

1. Confidence in our ability to think, cope and resolve the basic problems of life.

2. Confidence in our right to be successful and happy; the feeling of being worthy, deserving; entitled to assert our needs and wants to achieve our values

Something super important I took away the first read through; (this may sound painfully obvious to some of you, but i had to learn this)

“Self Esteem is your responsibility.”

Group therapy, my personal therapist and some of my trusted friends and family have provided such a supportive environment. I started to believe that I would need the “right” social environment to build healthier esteem.

That is incorrect.

Self esteem, great or poor; is reinforced by our own actions.

What hurts me much more than negativity from family; being treated poorly by superiors at work; is the guilt of not standing up to them. Of choosing to keep the peace in relationships where your values felt violated, instead of being honest, defending your values and/or stepping away.

This is self betrayal. Self Inefficacy. And it reinforces poor self esteem every time you do it.

Self Esteem is a CONSEQUENCE of your internal practices. Its not something you tackle as a whole.

So Branden lays out these “6 pillars” of what needs to be addressed internally. And slight improvements in these departments can have monumental changes on the bottom line.

Slight improvements can create an upward spiral that results in better Self Esteem. taken in Jackson, Tennessee by @radtherose

I have an uncle in his 70s who recently became disabled. He cannot clothe himself. He cannot walk further than a few steps.

One night while I was visiting him, he fell, and hit his head on the tile of his bedroom floor. His wife woke me up terrified; she needed my help picking him up. Thankfully, he was okay.

A few days later he shared with me, that he would like to see Europe just one last time. I did not doubt for one second that he would accomplish this, disabled or not. I visualized him doing it.

Thats what makes life worth living to me. Standing up to adversity and going the distance.

A week or so later, he asked me what my dream was. I told him Broadcast Journalism. And he laughed at me. Told me i was trying to climb Everest. That it was ‘a narrow plan’ and his wife joined in, telling me all the reasons why this wouldn’t work out for me.

It made me absolutely furious inside. I couldnt eat dinner with them that night, and I left their house a couple days later. I have hated them both ever since.

I bought this book to rectify the awful way they made me feel.
