The Stanford Rock Trail is complete! After more than three years of construction, more than 5,000 hours of labor, a global pandemic, and building through heat, snow, smoke, and rain, we completed a top to bottom re-route of Stanford Rock. It was an honor to take a leadership role in the construction of a 2,200 vertical foot trail with a stunning mountain top finish. We will be doing a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the summit on July 30. This would not be possible without the amazing volunteers who showed up day after day (for years!) to craft hand built singletrack. Join us as we ride to the summit, install a new sign, then ride back to Kilner Park for beer and BBQ. More details to follow.

Rad outdoor friends!
Summer trail work is on us once again. Starting today (July 6), the Forest Service has cleared TAMBA to begin running volunteer trail work days in Tahoe.

This marks my third year as a TAMBA volunteer crew leader leading the Stanford Rock Project. So far we’ve built nearly 4.5 miles of flowy new trail, including an incredible mountain top summit trail. This year we hope to finish Stanford Rock and move on to new projects.

Your volunteer TAMBA crew leaders have been hard at work with small projects, prepping for the build season, and adapting our work procedures for Covid-19. We are so ready to clear our heads and do something positive for 2020.

We need your help more than ever. Less than 3% of trail users volunteer or support their local trails organization. Less than three percent 😢😢😢. Volunteer non-profit organizations like TAMBA lost many of their fundraising events this year. Volunteers are more important than ever.

Trails and outdoor spaces are more important that ever. Volunteer trail work is one way to give back to the trails we love (and need right now). We have trail work for every ability level. Join us!

We will be running trail work days on Wednesdays and Sundays into August- Stanford Rock volunteer days- July 8, July 11, July 15, July 19, July 22, July 26, July 29, August 2, August 5

Found in my neighborhood in Tahoe. A pre-1984 bikes in wilderness sign.
Simple. Beautiful. Ironically, the trail it once marked has disappeared from lack of use and maintenance. Bikes don’t belong on many trails, but there are also many “wilderness” trails that are compatible with human powered bicycle use. As the sustainable trails coalition points out, local land managers should have input on which “wilderness” trails should include bicycle use. This one should certainly have been allowed for continued bike use. If it were still bike legal, we would have teams of volunteers riding the 8 miles out to keep it open, clear, and well maintained. #freethebike #sustainabletrailscoalition #trails #stanfordrock #westshoretahoe taken in West Shore (The Best Shore) Lake Tahoe by @radvanadventures

Today’s update from our New Zealand Trip- Rotorua

Rotorua is well known for its mountain biking and its geothermal wonderland. @daisydirtgirl had an urge to race enduro in NZ. So we got a last minute entry to an Enduro MTB race in Rotorua. Fun! And we didn’t get hurt! Sent it on many slippery wet rooty trails. Rotorua was a blast. Like all bike parks, it was quite bike parky and had that style of riding dialed. (Unsurprisingly, @daisydirtgirl won her category in her first ever enduro race). Rotorua MTB Park is in a working tree farm so the trails were mixed in with logging operations. A great example of recreation coexisting with commercial land use.
Rotorua is a large city for NZ (about 70K) with a thriving tourism center. They call it Roto-Vegas because of the motel strip in town. So quaint compared to actual Vegas. Even in February, Tourism was already winding down because of Covid-19.
The area is very geothermal active and has hot springs bubbling away throughout town. The earth’s crust is quite thin in the Rotorua region.

I will post the video on IGTV as well as YouTube. Recommend watching on 1080 resolution on YouTube. Link below.

Belated updates from our New Zealand MTB campervan road trip. New Zealand was everything I’d hoped it would be- amazing for the outdoor adventurer. Gorgeous coastlines, big mountains, amazing trails, friendly people, great fresh unprocessed food. We ended nearly every day crushed from the days adventures.
I had intended to post frequent updates during the trip. In the end, the lack of WiFi and spotty cell service was a welcome disconnect from a brewing storm in the world.
These pics are from our first few days in the North Island- Auckland to Bay of Islands. Check my feed to watch my video installment of North Island highlights. I’ll drop one new video each day for the next couple of weeks.

In this world of crazy here’s something I hope can ease the stress for a couple minutes. It’s been several months since I lasted posted on social media. @daisydirtgirl and I just got back from an idyllic month living in a van and riding bikes in New Zealand. We had limited cell service, practically no WiFi, and hadn’t seen a TV in over a month. Returned a day before the borders closed.
Here are some highlights from the North Island of New Zealand. I’ve made a whole bunch of short travel videos of our trip. I’ll drop a new one each day here and on FB. Enjoy! Hope to see many of my friends again and spend quality time outdoors soon.

Dear rad outdoor friends-
Many of you know that I've been leading another major trail building project on Tahoe's West Shore. The Stanford Rock Project is nearly complete for the year. It's taken two summers of building, over 2,100 volunteer hours and 1,680 grant funded trail crew hours to reach the summit. I've led somewhere around 75 volunteer build days over the last two summers. We are on the verge of delivering over 2 miles of hand built singletrack to an 8,500' mountain top summit (and four miles total on this project). I need your help for our final volunteer days of 2019. The summit trail is over 90% complete, but volunteer numbers are dwindling. We have two armored turns, an epic log ride, flow enhancements, finishing bombproof erosion controls, and some restoration work to wrap up for the year.

All hands on deck for our final volunteer build days. Organize your friends, get dirty, build amazing trail.

Saturday, October 19 Log ride day. I'm looking for 2-3 volunteers to help me build the longest log ride in the Tahoe Basin. We will be running the Alaskan Chainsaw Mill to make an epic trail feature. If you love log rides or want to learn about chainsaw milling, this is your jam.

Sunday, October 20. Final Summit build day! We need 10-15 for our final summit build day. Volunteers get to be among the first to ride the newest bike optimized mountain top summit trail in California. We have two armored turns, flow enhancements, restoration work and fine tuning.

Wednesday, October 23. Last Summit Build day!

Pics from today’s Stanford Rock build day.

First, a huge shout out to our ACE trail crew. They crushed it for TAMBA this week. This tough crew was camping and working, IN THE SNOW at the work location.

We finished rock work and made flowy insloped turns. This section is into fine tuning, flow enhancement, and restoration work and will likely open next week!

Come build trail with us. Upcoming trail days on:
October 3
October 6
October 12
October 13
October 15
October 16
October 20
October 23
