Some big scary, big exciting news about some very big pants I’ve recently put on - I’ve started my own company @liminapictures !

This decision came after years of straddling work worlds and juggling odd jobs, and finally last year my first full year of creative work since leaving law - through Screen Australia’s Enterprise program and a placement as Development Producer at @goodapplespictures . It was nothing like I expected and somehow so much more. I gained perspective, momentum, confidence and I’m incredibly grateful to the kind, smart, generous friends and mentors who offered encouragement, insight, and solace along the way.

I’ve been nervous about taking this leap. Something about not knowing enough, not being enough, not being ready. But then, there’s also something about being in your 30s and realising that sitting in self-doubt isn’t cute anymore and it’s frankly exhausting. Something about letting go of perfection in favour of being brave and true. Something about big pants being daunting because they’re big but also just pants and I love pants. Something about embracing the unknown - and the will to go there anyway - as intrinsic to the thrill of being alive.

Limina is connected to liminality - that in betweenness in feeling, identity, and knowledge - which I deeply relate to. But I wanted something that wasn’t just a state of being that can sometimes feel akin to being stuck or stagnant. I wanted a place that is full of possibility.

To me, storytelling at its best is transportive. It takes you somewhere unexpected, unforgettable. I think about the time I saw DRIVE MY CAR and came out of the cinema feeling inexplicably changed. I had plans to meet a friend for a beer, and it took a strangely intense amount of social self-discipline to get there - all I wanted to do was keep driving so I could stay with that feeling a little longer.

That’s the kind of space I want to create with Limina. A threshold. A crossing. An invitation to step through.

Next week, @raechoi_ will be joining the Creators Unleashed: Building Audiences, Communities & Global Reach panel at @screenworks_aus’ Regional to Global Screen Forum on Thursday 10 September.

There’s a cute @ina.series reunion for this one – she’ll be joined by creator, writer and director @rachelmaxinex as well as @alyce_adams who we had the pleasure of working with on our marketing strategy and release.

Alongside filmmakers and creators @dariusdevas @macfarlanebros and moderated by @cadenwrites, the panel will explore how today’s screen creators are building audiences, growing communities and finding new pathways to connect their work with viewers here and around the world.

If you’re heading along to Regional to Global, come say hello – we’d love to see you there!

SOME KIND OF BLUE is heading to South Korea next month! ⛰️

One of Asia’s leading music-focused film festivals, we’re so excited to play at Jecheon International Music & Film Festival as part of the FreeStyle section.

Feels fitting to find a home in Jecheon, located among beautiful mountainous terrain and known as “The Healing City” for its traditional herbal medicine and peaceful lakeside landscapes. It brings back many early thoughts about grief and the process of healing. Diving into narrative therapy with Poh Lin Lee, soaking in conversations around water and nature and memories and dreams. Of noticing what’s been long-ignored and marvelling at how the body revolts when accountability is due.

6 September, 3:30pm - Jecheon Culture Cinema 4
7 September, 7:20pm - Jecheon Culture Cinema 3

Thank you @jimffofficial for having us. If you or anyone you know happens to be around, we’d love for you to see it on the big screen. taken in Jecheon, Korea by @raechoi_

Our next Vixen Feature Profile is Rae Choi!

Rae is a Chinese-Australian filmmaker based in Magandjin/Brisbane and founder of Limina Pictures.

Rae says, “I’d like to see an industry that better recognises producers as the critical backbone of the screen sector. Independent producers carry enormous creative, emotional and logistical responsibility, often invisibly. Healthier systems, clearer pathways and stronger support structures would benefit the entire industry.”

Pink carpet moments ✨💕

From our world premiere to closing night, it was so surreal stepping onto the pink carpet at the legendary Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

A blur of cameras, nerves and trying to stay present through it all and in the moment together.

We’re so grateful to have shared it with a few special ones in our team! 💖 taken in Palais des Festivals, Cannes by @raechoi_
