My boys and I were traveling across the Azores, scouting locations for a commercial for The North Face. We visited some incredible spots, but every time we arrived at an “amazing” location, the weather refused to cooperate. It was always foggy, and we couldn’t see the blue lagoons or the breathtaking landscapes we had hoped for.

After three days of driving around in search of the perfect spots, I finally said, “Screw it. Let’s just drive and see where the road takes us.” About an hour later, we stumbled upon this abandoned hotel. It looked like something straight out of a post-apocalyptic world—foggy, overgrown with vegetation, and covered in graffiti. The place had incredible cinematic natural lighting and cool visuals, making it feel like a filmmaker’s dream. The dramatic atmosphere reminded me of The Last of Us, one of my favorite series and games.

The hotel had this eerie vibe, complete with a spooky, pitch-black basement. Naturally, I grabbed my camera and convinced my friends to film some tripod shots just for fun. (That’s how the intro to this video came about.)

That night, back at the Airbnb, I started editing the footage and absolutely loved how it turned out. I told my friends, “We have to go back tomorrow and shoot something for real.” So, I spent the night writing a short script, sketching a storyboard, and planning the shoot.

The next day, we returned to the abandoned hotel and filmed for a few hours. I ended up mixing some scenes from The North Face commercial we were working on, recorded a voiceover back in my office in Mexico, and turned it into this comedic homage to The Last of Us. I even designed some fake posters to tie it all together.

This project was so much fun and completely spontaneous. It reminded me of my filmmaking days back in school (where I did really REALLY shitty videos) and got me thinking about doing more projects like this again.
