- Death to the idol of certainty -
Clarity is good, I believe it is of good. Yet, ever so often, there comes a day where steps are less confident, slowing down under the weight of wait. One wants to collect all of the facts, double check all there is to know, take the better path. Then one wrestles with an inability to see the bigger picture, with the idol of certainty. That is, until one lets go, and gives themselves a chance to simply be, to discover, to make a mistake or two, as long as they don’t turn to stone. by @rafisarelo

Day 1 of checking if the “positive affirmations” I put on my bedroom wall 3 years ago biblically make sense. (I think there was one I threw away back then for that reason…). Feel free to comment :) by @rafisarelo

24 Février 1932 - 8 Mars 2025

In loving memory of Marie Judith William Bijoux.

To the woman who taught me to love hair care, who warned me about colourism, who sang me my favourite lullabies and who survived the 2010 earthquake by my side. To the woman who started a legacy of inclusivity in cosmetology, who disliked yellow roses but liked Canadian Tire coupons. To the one who loved pineapple juice, painted nails and adored Jesus. To my grandma who made me promise never to « become » a smoker like her daddy. To the diva who crossed over on international women’s day. Here is to Grannie 🥂!

(Last slide is the last time I got to celebrate my birthday with her. I was turning 18. Today I am 24)

(1st slide was a Valentine’s Day. Shoutout to @valredjy_l for making sure the flowers were delivered for me 💕) by @rafisarelo

- CROSS REFERENCE (DIVINE PROVIDENCE) -
John 14:27 / Psalms 116:7 / Psalms 103:17-19 / Psalms 18:2

Over a year has passed since I’ve started this painting on divine providence. I was inspired when making lemonade with my mom. I cut limes in half, and thought they were pretty. I then cut lemons in half. They were pretty too. Only I do not cut lemons as often as limes (due to our Caribbean heritage, I suppose). «When life gives you lemons » I thought, reflecting on the fact that I have always had what I needed…even when we lost the loved ones, or the house, or our sanity…even if the lemons had to come from mere undeserved compassion…or grace. I link it all back to the Lord’s grace. What type of fruit am I talking about? Their pulp is made from the peace of Christ wrapped in the thick skin of God’s favour. But in a fallen world like ours, we may need to endure the sour notes of many situations. Fortunately, the peace rolls good down my throat because the Lord stirs in His sweet presence for me. Amidst all the privileges I have ever had, I would not trade His mercy for anything.

I took a picture and painted this during my free time.
