Thankful 🍁

What an amazing morning last week at @boundaryranch and @kananaskislodge with @explorekananaskis! 🐾🏔️

We had the opportunity to experience adventure dog carting, a unique adventure that sees a team of huskies lead you through the beautiful forests of Kananaskis, surrounded by stunning Rocky Mountain scenery.

From meeting the dogs and learning about their care to heading out on the trail and exploring the local wildlife at the Guinn Wildlife Museum, it was such a memorable way to experience the outdoors and discover something a little different.

If you’re looking for a unique Kananaskis adventure, this one is worth adding to your list!

A huge thank you to @boundaryranch and @explorekananaskis for making this experience possible. ❤️

Connor rocking out to some @celinedion at the @calgarystampede. When he hits the big notes 👌

This is long but it’s cut down from 5 minutes and it’s well worth the watch. And yes, he gets this all from his mama @shurl

@celinedion if you see this, enjoy this rousing rendition of It’s All Coming Back to Me Now, obviously a family favourite. taken in Calgary Stampede by @raflopez

Girona has a reputation as a bucket-list cycling destination, so I expected it to feel expensive.

And honestly, it isn’t cheap especially once you factor in flights, accommodation, bike rentals, trailers, food, and getting there from Barcelona.

But it really wasn’t that bad either.

For our family of four, the big costs were flights and accommodation. We did fly Ultra Basic with @westjet (YYC - BAR), but you do get a proper carry on size piece of cabin luggage, which was sufficient for each of us for a week. And our accommodation was an Airbnb rather than hotel.

Food was pretty manageable, the train was easy, and a lot of the best parts of the trip were free: riding the greenways, wandering the old town, playground stops, lake dips, and just being outside together.

The real wildcard is anything bike-related.

Rentals, trailers, baggage fees, replacement gear, kits, and the deeply irrational part of your brain that starts convincing you a new bike would be a “practical souvenir.”

All in, our six-night trip came in around $4,700 CAD before extra shopping and bike gear.

Full transparency: that number would have been closer to $5,700 if I hadn’t flown standby and if WestJet hadn’t covered my bike rental after my bike didn’t arrive.

So no, Girona wasn’t cheap. But for a family cycling trip in one of the best riding destinations in the world, it felt like really good value. taken in Girona, Spain by @raflopez

Open. Wild. Free.

On June 14, @yycruncrew traded running shoes for bike pedals and became YYCBikeCrew for the day.

With the roads closed to traffic and the incredible scenery of Highwood Pass all around us, it was a reminder that some of the world’s most breathtaking rides are only an hour from Calgary. Sometimes, the best adventures are right in our own backyard.

A few thoughts after a week of riding around Girona:

🚴 There’s incredible road riding here. Smooth pavement, quiet roads, and climbs if you want them.

🛞 The gravel scene lives up to the hype. If I had to pick one bike for a trip, though, I’d lean gravel. It’s hard to go wrong.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Riding with a family? The Carrilet routes are a no-brainer. Traffic-free, easy to navigate, and they connect some amazing places.

⚡ I rented an e-assist gravel bike. As a reasonably strong rider, my choice was to leave the assist off. But with a trailer, kids, or just a long day exploring, it’s a great option to have. The best bike is the one that lets you enjoy the ride.

☕ Don’t rush the stops. Coffee, bakeries, a swim in Banyoles, a long lunch, post-ride drinks… they’re all part of the experience. And @eatsleepcycle_girona has all the apres vibes.

📏 You don’t need to ride 150 km to have a great day. Girona has a way of making shorter rides feel bigger.

My biggest takeaway? Don’t get too caught up in riding Girona the “right” way.

Just pick a bike, head out of town, and see where the day takes you. taken in Girona, Spain by @raflopez

One of my favourite parts of travelling is discovering places you weren’t looking for.

Girona has no shortage of great places to stay, and one thing we learned is that you don’t necessarily need to stay right in the Old Town. The west side of the Onyar River is still an easy walk to the historic centre, cafés, and restaurants, while making it a little easier to get around with bikes, trailers, or whatever adventure you’ve brought along.

While exploring, we stumbled across @vallamagada and managed to get a sneak peek before they officially open on June 22. Set in the Garrotxa countryside, it feels like the perfect balance of a quiet escape while still being close enough to enjoy everything the Girona region has to offer.

A few things that caught our eye:
🚴 Cervélo bike rentals.
🐶 Pet friendly.
☕ Café and social spaces.
🌿 A beautiful boutique setting surrounded by nature.

It’s definitely a spot we’ll keep in mind for a future trip.

If you’ve been to Girona, would you stay in the heart of the city or escape to the countryside? taken in Girona, Spain by @raflopez

So, we managed to rent a bike, hook up a trailer, and spend a few days exploring Girona with the kids. Here’s what I learned:

1️⃣ Flexibility beats planning.
Jet lag, snack breaks, naps, playground stops… trying to force a perfect itinerary is a losing battle. Roll with it.

2️⃣ The Carrilet Greenways are incredible.
A network of converted rail trails connecting towns and villages, they’re equally suited to mileage-hungry cyclists and families looking for a stress-free ride.

3️⃣ Your kids determine your range, not your fitness.
Our one-year-old’s nap schedule was the limiting factor. About an hour out, a radler, some chips, a playground stop, then an hour home. Honestly, it was a pretty great pace.

4️⃣ Think about your bike and trailer setup.
Renting a bike in Girona is easy. Renting a trailer is much harder. I’d love to see more shops cater to families because there are so many parents who’d love to experience these routes. I’m looking at you, @eatsleepcycle_girona @tomata.girona @velodrom.cc😉

5️⃣ Slow down.
I came here expecting a cycling trip. The best moments ended up being the unplanned ones like stopping for snacks, exploring villages, and letting the kids set the pace.

Next up… where to stay in Girona with kids and bikes. 🚲 taken in Girona, Spain by @raflopez
