Product photos for the ROG Flow Z13 - ACRNM RMT02.

Again, this project was such a dream to work on, to design a piece of tech, to think of how we use and interact with screens, and the desire to make something that looks like it comes from another time, another logic. It’s littered with inspirations from all my favorite science fiction, from the off-white and orange keyboard being from the self-destruct pad in Alien, to the back machined motifs being inspired by Star Trek’s deck and “on screen” window into space.

Then working with brilliant people like @erlsn.acr, @philjdsaunders, @rev_sect, @theanix, on how we pragmatically use the machine, how does it change to carry our tech with us, designing something that works for us. All which let to further ideation and exploration of the graphic and visual world for the RMT02 inspired by likewise ideas from Virilio.

Blessed to have worked with @acronym.gmbh and @asusrog to make such an object happen. by @rafrennie

Sharing more of the process and work behind the RMT02, it’s graphics and conception.

Throughout the RMT02 project there are the use of shapes we called Portals, they permeate from my first contribution to the project through every facet taking on new purposes and meanings as the lore, concept, and project kept expanding.

When I came on to the project the brilliant concept artist and industrial designer Phil Saunders had developed this idea of a field machine. Phil designed a custom bumper for each corner of the RMT02 which also worked as the connection points for the carry strap and modular carry system that would come. Pressing to me were the large industrial looking grips he added to the back to help carry the machine in any orientation.

For me to play against this hard industrial work machine feel that Phil had developed I wanted to introduce something more playful and soft. When I was at the Art Gallery of Ontario I was looking at these combs, picks, cups, from around the Byzantine time that all had these incredibly detailed engravings and works of art as a part of them. I loved this idea of adding art or an ordinary object or turning an ordinary object into a work of art and I wanted to create my own engraving on the RMT02.

As the lore specified, this was a machine that was being used for location and navigating and I wanted to represent that on the machine. The top half of the machine was imagined as the bridge’s screen from Star Trek TNG, which I grew up watching. The bottom half of the machine was conceived as being radar, a circular display for tracking, locating and navigating.

With those two motifs designed in a very basic form, I then began trying new shapes, or cutting up the base motif to go around Phil’s designed grips, as well as around areas where CNC milling would be impossible or limited due to the necessities of the machine.

A big inspiration for these shapes came from the AlgoRythm works of Karl Gerstner where he uses a custom grid to cut up and layer shapes to create compositions. As well, a lot of inspiration came from Takenobu Igarashi and sculptural works, his work in metal, and especially images of CNC tests from the ‘80s in his b by @rafrennie
