Various Artists - NuNorthern Soul Restructured & Reworked by YARNI

x4 Reworks from the NuNorthern Soul back catalogue from Sheffield based artist and producer YARNI ahead of his album release later in the year.

First up is Ragz Nordset folksy 2013 gem ‘You Started It All’, with YARNI offering up an enticing blend of thickset, dub disco-influenced grooves, raw clipped guitar licks, echoing drum fills, heady sonic textures and – as the track builds towards a breathless conclusion – cascading strings and skittish, pitched-up post-D&B grooves. Like the word of fellow South Yorkshireman Crooked Man, it’s a radical, righteous and genuinely revolutionary revision.

This week marks the 10 year anniversary of the release of my EP 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠. A piece of musical work that took me years to make teaching myself ProTools in my little mezzanine flat in the heart of Liverpool. Battling a good but outdated ProTools version I recorded my cat, the rain on my skylight, a battered accordion and sampled my old music box back-and forwards. I played piano, guitar, programmed strings, hammered some pretty nice stuff out of all angles of my one floor tom and spent hours layering the harmonies to the point where my neighbours could sing them back to me. Every weird sound, quirk, vocal and instrumental layer has my sweat and soul in it and is to this day some of my proudest work.

The songs caught the interest of @mario_a_leal who took the pieces on for some absolutely precious production enhancements, luscious beats and many, many more strings! Thanks to the hard work of the great @phatphilcooper and @nunorthernsoul and the never wavering David McTague (@mellowtoneclub Records), the EP saw light in April 2013 and has since had an incredible journey of reworks and syncs bringing the streams of the @ronbasejam Rework of '𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑰𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒍' into the millions on Spotify. I am very proud and grateful for every person who lent their time and talent to this musical work. The ethos behind the EP is to take what you dream to do out of sleep state and into real life. Something I’ve tried to live by and something this EP certainly reflects from its long birth in my old flat in Henry street to its feature on @vogueturkiye ‘s Instagram editorial. I am a phd researcher exploring artists' wellbeing. If you would like to take part in an interview sharing your experience with wellbeing, please get in touch. I am looking for musicians signed to a 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥 or management. This research aims to inform policy that considers the actual artist when developing support and to further awareness for the real artist working experience as opposed to unhelpful misconceptions and stereotypes!

The EP was recorded in 2006 at Liverpool’s iconic @parrstreetstudios with top man @jonwithnall. Later released to coincide with our inaugural nationwide UK tour in 2008. The original run of CDs sold out many years ago, but ‘Little Stings’ will from 26th of March be available via streaming platforms. 🙌🏼✨
