September 2024 marks the moment in my life where I've spent an equal amount of time living in Canada as I did Lebanon.
Thanks to the help of @_solanacain I was able to memorialize the moment with my first publication in @globeandmail

50/50 is a tribute to my family and the places we've called home. I was born in Canada, but lived the first 50% of my life in Lebanon. It's been a long time (11 years) since I lived there.
Canada has been incredible to me, and I'm grateful for every opportunity that's come my way since we moved here full time. I only hope that Lebanese people can have the same opportunities, without the eminent risk of war.

With the current aggression in the area, I was happy to share some gentler photos that depict the country that treated me so kindly as a child.

The majority of this series was photographed last August, after a 4 year long period of being unable to visit due to Covid. It was the longest I'd ever been away. So much had changed, and so much has changed since then. Just this morning I awoke to the news that my elementary school teacher was killed in an air strike.

My father is currently still in Lebanon, due to difficulties accessing a visa. I can only hope that he will join us soon.

You can read the story at the link in my bio, and more Lebanon photos can be found on my website. by @rahhalphoto

Fragments (2019)

I am quickly approaching what I've started to call my 50/50. It's hit me recently that soon, I won't be able to say that I've lived the majority of my life in Lebanon. As of September 2024, I'll officially have spent an equal amount of time living outside the country as I did in it. Which will one day become 40/60, then 30/70 and so on. My time there seems to have slipped away from me.

Not too long ago I decided to revisit some pictures I'd taken the last time I visited, only to realize about half of them were corrupted or lost entirely. What I'd thought to be the last strings of the memories I'd made there were virtually unsalvageable. It was the sadness I felt looking at choppy family photos and forgotten landscapes that made me realize how fitting it all was.

That's the thing about Lebanon.

Anyone who finds themselves residing there knows this trade is inevitable. Once you establish yourself here, you must be willing to accept wholeheartedly, the continuous and sudden loss of everything you once had and all you've ever known. In return, you're exchanged an endless supply of hope and new beginnings, and the most insane will to live and persevere i've ever seen.

I saw it in every person I'd met there. I saw it in countless remains of civilizations that had come through Lebanon. Landmarks of the people in the past who'd occupied this land. Lebanon can be associated with destruction and devastation. Loss, separation, grief, and death. While also harbouring restoration, beauty, and rebirth.

The country is rumoured to have been rebuilt upon its own ashes seven times. Earning itself the the title of the phoenix.
I think what I see here, is not only a people who will rebuild themselves again, but also my own memories, piecing itself together.
Looking at these fragments of what once were, I've never been more proud of where I've come from. by @rahhalphoto
